Eddie Howe set to leave Newcastle United after nearly five years in charge

Eddie Howe is expected to leave his role as Newcastle head coach less than a month before the start of the Premier League season

Anthony Elanga - Logs 74 minutes in return Elanga returned from the World Cup with Sweden and played 74 minutes in a preseason friendly against Bristol City, the club announced.
Impact Elanga endured a frustrating campaign last season, managing just two goals and an assist across 44 appearances with only 21 starts, well short of the promise he'd shown in previous years. His pace, one-on-one ability and relentless work rate off the ball remain the traits that make him such a dangerous attacking outlet when in form. He rounded out his summer with Sweden at the World Cup, scoring against both the Netherlands and Japan before the team's elimination at the hands of France. Elanga is expected to compete with Harvey Barnes for the right wing role as he continues building up his match fitness through preseason.

Fabian Schar - Not seriously injured Schar (groin) is not believed to be seriously injured after being forced off in Wednesday's 4-1 friendly loss to Bristol City, according to coach Eddie Howe, per Lee Ryder of Chron...
Impact Schar was substituted in the 21st minute of Wednesday's friendly loss, continuing a pattern of fitness issues that limited him to just 19 appearances across the Premier League and Champions League last season due to ankle, foot and concussion problems. With no match scheduled between now and the Aug. 8 friendly against Valencia, Newcastle faces no immediate pressure to rush him back, and manager Eddie Howe's comments suggest he remains on track to be ready for the club's Premier League opener against Liverpool on Aug. 23.

Sven Botman - Starts in friendly, scores own goal Botman (face) was in the starting lineup in Wednesday's friendly against Bristol City.
Impact Botman looked worryingly overmatched in this friendly match, and the center-back even scored an own goal in the second half. At least he looked healthy, which means he should continue to build up match fitness with an eye toward being an option for the Magpies ahead of the Premier League opener against Liverpool on Aug. 23.

Fabian Schar - Subs off injured Schar was subbed off during the first half of Wednesday's friendly against Bristol City due to an undisclosed injury.
Impact Schar exited the game just 20 minutes into the first half, and further tests will be needed to determine the severity of the injury. Injuries aren't something new for Schar, though -- he was limited to just 19 appearances between the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in the 2025/26 campaign due to ankle and foot injuries, as well as a concussion.
