Costa Rica is a relatively recent addition to the World Cup circuit, making its first appearance in 1990. With victories over Sweden and Scotland, Costa Rica emerged from group play before losing to Czechoslovakia in the knockout stage.

After a 12-year hiatus, Costa Rica returned to the FIFA World Cup with a 1-1-1 record in its group. The country was eliminated on goal difference, as Turkey surrendered just three goals across three games, compared to Costa Rica’s six.
The 2006 World Cup was a disastrous showing. Costa Rica gave up nine goals in the Group Stage – only Serbia and Montenegro allowed more with 10 – and finished with a record of 0-0-3.
Though Costa Rica did not reach the World Cup in 2010, it responded with its best showing four years later. Costa Rica cruised through the Group Stage with a 2-1-0 record and snuck by Greece in the Round of 16, winning 5-3 on penalty kicks. The run ended in the Quarter-finals with a 4-3 loss to the Netherlands.
On October 7, 2017, Costa Rica joined Mexico to become the second member of the CONCACAF to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. The deciding match was a 1-1 draw with Honduras.
