Three goals in 2023
Pines started 21 matches and scored three times during the 2023 season.
Impact
Pines was one of the first names on the team sheet throughout the 2023 season as long as he was fit. He rewarded that with some solid play that should continue in 2024. The defender also added a career-high three goals, though he certainly isn't worth chasing for his offensive output moving forward.

Option for return
Pines served a one-match ban due to yellow card accumulation and is now eligible to return for an Aug. 20 trip to RBNY.
Impact
Pines picked up a fifth yellow card against Inter Miami and is now eligible to return. The defender has made 18 appearances when fully fit and available and is an option for the starting XI once more. With Pines available once more Steven Birnbaum could fall to the bench.

Sees fifth yellow card
Pines had one shot (zero on goal) and one chance created in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Inter Miami CF. In addition, he was given a yellow card in the 90th minute.
Impact
Pines will not play against the Red Bulls after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. He's been averaging 3.2 clearances and two interceptions per game in 18 appearances. The defender's absence means that Steve Birnbaum is expected to get the start at center back in his place.

Keeps clean sheet in win
Pines made five clearances, four interceptions and won three of three tackles in Tuesday's 1-0 victory against FC Dallas.
Impact
Pines defended well on Tuesday as he helped his side to a seventh clean sheet in 17 matches since he broke into the XI in the back-three at the start of April. Pines has started 16 of those 17 league games.

Scores goal against Miami
Pines took five shots (two on target) and scored a goal in Saturday's 2-1 victory against Inter Miami. He also made a block, a clearance and three interceptions in the match.
Impact
Pines was a surprisingly dangerous attacking threat on Saturday, and he eventually opened the scoring by bundling the ball over the line on a goal-line scramble, his second time finding the net in his last two games from central defense.

Scores in draw
Pines scored one goal to go with one shot (one on goal) and one chance created in Wednesday's 2-2 draw against CF Montreal.
Impact
Pines opened the scoring with a header following a cross from the left wing late in the first half. That was Pines' second goal of the season, but as a central defender on a 3-4-3 setup, he's likely to continue garnering most of his upside through defensive stats.

Creates chance in win
Pines made five clearances, two interceptions and created a chance in Saturday's 3-0 victory against the Galaxy.
Impact
Pines and D.C. United have now kept back-to-back clean sheets, as part of five shutouts in nine league games since Pines was inserted into the starting XI in the back-three at the start of April.

Sent off against Montreal
Pines was shown a straight red card (following a VAR review) in the 79th minute of Saturday's defeat against CF Montreal. He also scored the own goal that clinched the 1-0 loss for...
Impact
Pines ended his season in horrible fashion, scoring an own goal and then getting sent off with a foul on Ismael Kone in the penalty area. David Ochoa was at least able to save the ensuing spot kick, but Pines will still be suspended for next weekend's finale against FC Cincinnati, with Tony Alfaro likely to replace him in central defense. Pines kept three clean sheets in 21 league appearances (16 starts) as D.C. finishes the campaign with the worst record in MLS.

Busy defensively
Pines had four tackles (three won), six clearances, and one interception in Wednesday's 3-0 loss against Sporting Kansas City.
Impact
Pines had plenty to do to try and stem the tide of Kansas City attackers and failed to really accomplish much. Pines did stuff the stat sheet with six clearances, four blocks and four tackles, but D.C. still conceded three goals. Pines faces immense volume quite frequently with how poor D.C. United have been, giving him some value that way, though clean sheet upside is next to non-existent.

Four interceptions in win
Pines made four interceptions and one tackle during Saturday's 3-2 win over New England.
Impact
Pines made four interceptions and had plenty to do to stop a dangerous Revolution attack. While they did concede twice Pines proved to be a crucial part of the upset win. That said the central defender doesn't have much fantasy upside simply due to his more defensive role. Pines will hope to fill the stat sheet next time out against Columbus.

Subs in against Toronto
Pines made three clearances, an interception and won one of one tackles in last weekend's victory against Toronto FC.
Impact
Pines kept five clean sheets in 18 MLS appearances (16 starts) this season, though he missed significant time with an ankle injury at the start of the season and an undisclosed injury right after the Gold Cup. But he impressed when he was fit, and the 23-year-old will want to be more consistently available in 2022.

Provides scary play for Halloween
Pines made four tackles (two won) and intercepted four times in the 3-1 loss to Columbus on Saturday.
Impact
Pines was good for the majority of the match Saturday, however, his decision-making was less than ideal. The defender made numerous questionable passes and one of them would eventually provide the final goal of the game to secure the win for Columbus. He will remain a safe option for peripherals, but if you are in a format that counts goals against, he is not the best choice.

Starts vs. NYRB
Pines (undisclosed) is in the starting XI for Saturday's clash with NYRB.
Impact
Pines was out for nearly two months with a still unknown injury, but it appears his return to training Thursday was enough for him to start Saturday. The defender will look to replenish the heavily depleted D.C. United defense.

Returns to full training
Pines (undisclosed) is in full training, according to Steven Goff of The Washington Post.
Impact
Pines is back in full training, but "probably not ready for 90." The defender has faced a long slog of a recovery missing all of August with a still unknown injury. Pines will look to make his return, at least to the bench either Saturday, away to NYRB or against Chicago on Wednesday.
