To undergo knee surgery Pato has returned to Brazil and will undergo an "exploratory" surgery on his knee on Sept. 9, Orlando City announced Sunday.

Impact The timetable for Pato's recovery likely depends on what is revealed in the "exploratory" surgery, but considering the operation won't even happen for another three weeks, it seems safe to assume he will not return to action this season. Pato tallied three goals and five assists in 22 MLS appearances (14 starts) in 2022, and he had been starting to carve out a role for himself in attacking midfield before injuring his knee against New York last weekend.

Out indefinitely Pato has returned to Brazil in order to undergo exploratory surgery on his right knee, his club announced Sunday.

Impact Pato could easily miss the rest of the season but an exact recovery schedule has yet to be determined. While fitness hasn't been a strong point in much of his career, Pato has done well in 2022 with three goals and five assists in 22 appearances (14 starts) before suffering this injury in Saturday's match against the New York Red Bulls. Jake Mulraney could see more time on the pitch now that Pato is out for the foreseeable future, though recent-signing Nicholas Gioacchini also has more to offer than we've seen so far.

Injury could be serious Pato underwent medical scans on Sunday that revealed "damage to the internal structures of the knee," Telemundo reporter Mike Gramajo reports.

Impact Pato isn't done getting evaluated, but there are concerns that the injury he suffered against the Red Bulls on Saturday is an ACL tear which would rule him out for the rest of the season. Nothing has been confirmed yet but, especially considering his history, it's very possible this injury is serious.

This has been an odd season for Pato who started the campaign as a nailed-on starter but quickly fell to the bench, despite some solid production, with eight goal contributions in 20 appearances. It's uncertain what role lies in the future for Pato but when in the starting XI he does have some upside.
