MAURICE EDU BIO

Former U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) midfielder and defender Maurice Edu serves as an analyst for FOX Sports’ premier soccer coverage. Edu joined FOX Sports broadcast team at the end of 2018 and has since contributed to FOX’s soccer coverage across the USMNT matches, Major League Soccer, FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ and FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™, CONMEBOL Copa América 2021™, 2019 & 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup and more.

On the international stage, Edu earned 46 caps with the national team, representing them at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He captained the Olympic team through qualifying and was a co-captain at the games in Beijing. Edu narrowly missed out on the 2014 World Cup roster before enduring a tough spell with injuries which eventually forced him to formally announce his retirement from the sport in 2019.

Edu’s success at the club level began after being selected with the first overall pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC. He went on to win Rookie of the Year honors the following season. He would go on to enjoy a career in Europe that saw him earn a move to play for Rangers in Scotland in 2008. After winning three league titles, three cups and playing in both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, he eventually joined Stoke City in England and Bursapor in Turkey before returning back to MLS to captain the Philadelphia Union. Edu also has the distinct accomplishment of being one of the cover athletes of the North American version of the FIFA Soccer ’09 video game.

A Fontana, California native, Edu was most recently inducted to the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the 2021 class. His collegiate highlights while playing for the Terrapins from 2004 – 2006 included a role on the 2005 squad, which won the NCAA College Cup national championship, and being named a first-team All-American in 2006.

In addition to working with FOX Sports, Edu serves as an analyst for CBS and MLS. He is also an ambassador for the U.S. Soccer Foundation.
