With the 33-year-old's departure comes a potential opportunity for young defensemen Ilya Solovyov and Yan Kuznetsov, who were called up to the NHL on Wednesday.

Perhaps after some AHL action, Barrie will be ready to play for the Flames again.

Impact Barrie was participating in the Flames' training camp on a tryout basis. He was limited to a goal and 15 points in 41 regular-season contests with Nashville in 2023-24, but he's traditionally been an effective presence with the man advantage. If Calgary uses him on its top power-play unit, then a 40-plus point campaign is entirely possible, but the Flames might opt to use MacKenzie Weegar in that role over Barrie. At the end of the day, while Barrie can be an effective offensive force under the right circumstances, it remains to be seen if the 33-year-old will enjoy those opportunities with the Flames.

Impact Barrie was out of the lineup for the 11th straight game Saturday against the Blue Jackets, and has played in only five games since the end of December. With just one goal and 11 assists in 35 games this season, Barrie has to be seen as a failed experiment by the Preds since they acquired him in the Mattias Ekhom trade last year. Barrie is expected to become a free agent in July, and will look to ply his trade with another team next season.
