Assigned to minor-league affiliate The Maple Leafs assigned Boyd to AHL Toronto on Tuesday, Kristen Shilton of TSN.ca reports.

Impact Boyd has yet to crack the lineup through the Leafs' first four games of the campaign, so this move doesn't come as a surprise. He'll likely bounce between the minors and Toronto's taxi squad throughout the season, but Boyd won't be a viable fantasy option in 2020-21.

Journeys to Toronto Boyd signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Maple Leafs on Saturday.

Impact Over the last three seasons, Boyd has played 85 games with the Capitals and recorded eight goals and 23 assists. The 27-year-old center rarely rises past the fourth line, and on a team with Auston Matthews, John Tavares and Alex Kerfoot, he's destined for a fourth-line role once again if he's not bumped out of the lineup by Jason Spezza. Boyd could spend a handful of games in the AHL as well.

Set to hit open market Boyd did not receive a qualifying offer from the Capitals, so he'll hit the market as an unrestricted free agent Friday, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports.

Impact The 27-year-old was used sparingly by the Capitals during the 2019-20 season, accumulating 10 points across 24 games. It's unclear what sort of market Boyd will have, as he could find himself stuck back in the AHL or head across to Europe to find a team next season.
