Cleveland Monsters' Stefan Matteau Announces Retirement Cleveland Monsters forward Stefan Matteau has announced his retirement from professional hockey, it was announced earlier this week.

Ending playing career Matteau announced Monday that he was hanging up his skates.

Impact Matteau was limited to just 15 minor-league games for AHL Cleveland this year, in which he generated two goals and five assists. Selected by the Devils with the 29th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, the Chicago native logged 92 contests at the NHL level for the Devils, Canadiens, Golden Knights, Blue Jackets and Avalanche. In those appearances, the 31-year-old tallied six goals, five helpers and 41 PIM.

Released from PTO Matteau was released from his PTO by the Blue Jackets on Friday, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.

Impact The 29-year-old winger last played in the NHL for one game with Colorado to open the 2021-22 season, and he spent two seasons in the Columbus system before that, but Matteau's attempt to win a roster spot in camp fell short. He could still sign a minor-league deal and remain with the Jackets at AHL Cleveland.

Gets chance with Columbus Matteau signed a professional tryout with the Blue Jackets on Tuesday, per CapFriendly.

Impact Matteau started 2022-23 in Sweden with Linkoping HC of the SHL, but he managed just one assist in 16 games. He then transferred to ERC Ingolstadt of Germany's DEL, where he had 20 points in 19 regular-season contests and eight points in 16 playoff games. The winger had four points in 27 games with the Blue Jackets over parts of two seasons in 2019-20 and 2020-21. While there's familiarity between the player and the organization, Columbus would likely benefit from putting younger players with more potential in the Opening Night lineup.

Impact Matteau will come out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Wings after appearing in five straight contests. The 27-year-old doesn't offer much offensively, but he brings a physical presence into the lineup with 15 hits over six contests this year.
