Placed on injured reserve Edvinsson (lower body) was placed on injured reserve Thursday.

Impact The Red Wings announced Monday that Edvinsson had been ruled out through the Olympic break, so his placement on injured reserve is simply procedural. Justin Holl and Sheldon Dries were called up Thursday to provide additional depth in Edvinsson's absence. Across 48 appearances this year, Edvinsson has accumulated six goals, 11 assists, 104 blocked shots, 63 hits and 54 PIM while averaging 22:35 of ice time.

Shut down through Olympics Edvinsson (lower body) will not return until after the Olympic break, Daniella Bruce of the Red Wings' official site reports Monday.

Impact Edvinsson likely would have been in the mix to be an injury replacement for Sweden if he wasn't dealing with a lower-body injury of his own. With the blueliner ruled out for the next five games, he almost certainly will be designated for injured reserve in order to give Detroit an open roster spot for a recall.

Impact Edvinsson will miss his second straight game, and it's unclear when he will be ready to return to the lineup. He has accounted for six goals, 17 points, 57 shots on net, 104 blocked shots and 63 hits across 48 appearances this season. Travis Hamonic replaced Edvinsson in Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss to Minnesota, but the Red Wings also have Erik Gustafsson as an option for Saturday's contest.

Impact Edvinsson collected a loose puck after a failed clearance by goalie Dennis Hildeby. Edvinsson was able to dangle around a Toronto defender before converting on a backhand shot from in tight to secure the win. The defenseman has earned two goals and five assists over 14 outings in a solid December. For the season, the 22-year-old is at five goals (two game-winners), 14 points, 48 shots on net, 71 blocked shots, 47 hits, 48 PIM and a plus-8 rating through 37 appearances. He's making decent all-around contributions, though he's slightly behind the pace that saw him rack up 31 points in 78 outings a year ago.
