Impact Gagner snapped a three-game drought when he set up Derek Ryan on the opening goal late in the first period. The 34-year-old Gagner has done fairly well while picking up bottom-six minutes in a part-time role for the Oilers this season. Gagner's place in the lineup is likely safe until Dylan Holloway (lower body) returns, which is expected in roughly two weeks.

With three points in as many games since signing to rejoin the Oilers at the start of November, Gagner has at least tried to help the team amid its early struggles. Gagner has some experience as a power-play specialist, but playing on the second unit in Edmonton is unlikely to provide much of a meaningful boost to his production.

With his strong performance Thursday, Gagner could start to see himself in the lineup more often than not as the Oilers look to dig themselves out of their early season struggles.
