Cleared for training camp Cates (foot) has been cleared for the start of Flyers' training camp, per Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Impact Cates sustained his foot injury during Game 2 of Philadelphia's second-round playoff series, but was able to avoid needing surgery for it. The 27-year-old winger shared that his timetable for return would've been around one month, which gave him plenty of time to recover in the offseason. Cates had a career year in 2025-26, compiling 18 goals, 47 points, 132 shots on goal, 102 hits, 51 blocked shots and a plus-26 rating across 82 regular-season games. With his clearance for camp, he'll likely continue to center one of Philadelphia's top three lines for the 2026-27 campaign.

Won't need surgery Cates will not need to have a procedure for the foot injury he sustained during the 2026 playoffs, per Charlie O'Connor of PHLY Sports on Tuesday.

Impact Cates told reporters during the Flyers' postseason press conference Tuesday that he probably would not have been able to return in the playoffs, even if the team had advanced past the second round. While he won't need surgery for his foot injury, O'Connor noted that Cates will be sidelined for around a month. As such, Cates should more than likely be ready for the start of the 2026-27 campaign, barring any setbacks.

Done for series Cates (lower body) has been ruled out for the rest of the second-round series versus the Hurricanes, Jackie Spiegel of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Wednesday.

Impact Cates was injured during Game 2 versus the Hurricanes, though he played 20:53 of ice time. The 27-year-old winger is currently mired in a five-game goal drought during which he recorded two assists, five shots and 16 hits. With the Flyers also dealing with injuries to Christian Dvorak (undisclosed) and Owen Tippett (undisclosed), the absence of Cates will stretch their depth, especially down the middle.

Deemed day-to-day Head coach Rick Tocchet said Tuesday that Cates (lower body) is day-to-day, according to Flyers Rinkside Reporter Kendall Skalicky.

Impact Per Mike Sielski of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Cates was seen after Monday's Game 2 overtime loss holding a walking boot that would have fit his right foot. Tocchet also relayed that he has yet to speak to the team's head athletic trainer about Cates' health, but they will communicate at some point Tuesday. Game 3 is set for Thursday in Philadelphia.

Two-point effort in Game 3 Cates scored a power-play goal and added an even-strength assist Wednesday during the Flyers' 5-2 win over the Penguins in Game 3 of their first-round series.

Impact Cates doesn't carry a ton of upside as a bottom-six forward, but he managed to find the back of the net with a shortie in this blowout win -- the first one he scored of this kind in the current campaign.
