Josh Samanski - NHL News & Rumors

Called up to majors Samanski was recalled under emergency conditions by the Oilers on Thursday.

Impact With Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (lower body) shifting to injured reserve, the Oilers had just 12 healthy forwards on their active roster, giving Samanski the opportunity to return to the big leagues. He just missed out on the team's Opening Night roster, as the Oilers opted to go with Owen Michaels for the fourth-line center role. The 24-year-old Samanski appeared in 24 regular-season games with the Oilers in 2025-26, where he posted two goals, four points, nine shots on net, 27 hits and 14 blocked shots. He'll likely be a rotational forward on the team's fourth line for as long as Nugent-Hopkins remains shelved.

Sent down Monday Samanski was loaned to AHL Bakersfield on Monday.

Impact Samanski was slated to compete for a checking-line center role during training camp, but he'll be left off the Opening Night roster while Owen Michaels remains with the NHL club ahead of the regular season. Samanski made 24 regular-season appearances with the Oilers last year, recording two goals, two assists, 27 hits, 14 blocked shots and six PIM while averaging 10:33 of ice time.

Poised to compete for spot Samanski is expected to compete for a checking-line center role during training camp, Derek Van Diest of NHL.com reports Sunday.

Impact Samanski flashed his skills as a reliable two-way forward last campaign. He contributed two goals, four points, nine shots on net, 14 blocked shots and 27 hits over 24 regular-season appearances with the Oilers in 2025-26. Samanski should get a long look at training camp, as Mattias Janmark (undisclosed) continues to recover from surgery. Janmark underwent the procedure in March, and it remains unclear when he will be ready to return.

Scores in playoff debut Samanski scored a goal on two shots in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Ducks in Game 2.

Impact Samanski was inserted into the lineup, along with Curtis Lazar, to account for the absences of Adam Henrique (lower body) and Jason Dickinson (undisclosed). The 24-year-old Samanski was able to cash in a goal in his playoff debut, though it's unlikely he'll be a major factor on offense the rest of the way. He had four points, nine shots on net, 27 hits and 14 blocked shots over 24 regular-season outings.

Gets goal in win Samanski scored a goal on one shot, blocked two shots and went plus-2 in Thursday's 6-1 win over the Canucks.

Impact Samanski took a shot that pinballed in off a Canucks defenseman for the opening goal just 1:58 into the game. The 24-year-old forward has gotten lucky bounces for both of NHL goals so far. He added two assists, nine shots on net, 27 hits, 14 blocked shots and a plus-2 rating over 24 appearances in the regular season. If Leon Draisaitl (lower body) or Jason Dickinson (leg) remain out for the start of the playoffs, Samanski should keep his place in the lineup.

Lucky bounce for first career goal Samanski was credited a goal in Saturday's 5-2 loss to the Lightning.

Impact Samanski's first goal didn't even come on his own shot. The Lightning won the puck out of a scrum, but a pass toward the net bounced over the defenseman's stick and evaded Andrei Vasilevskiy. Samanski hasn't recorded an official shot on net in his last eight games, adding little in the way of offense from a bottom-six role. He's at three points, two shots on net, 15 hits, six PIM and a plus-2 rating over 14 appearances as a rookie this year.

Up on emergency basis Samanski was recalled from AHL Bakersfield by the Oilers on an emergency basis, the team announced Sunday.

Impact Samanski was just sent down Friday, but with Adam Henrique (knee) now day-to-day, the Oilers were able to call him back up on an emergency basis. The 22-year-old has two assists in six games on the season so far. Given Henrique's status, Samanski will likely have the chance to add to those numbers as soon as Sunday night against the Golden Knights.

Sent down Friday Samanski was reassigned to AHL Bakersfield on Friday, Jason Gregor of Sports 1440 Edmonton reports.

Impact Samanski was likely to have a tough time getting playing time after the Oilers traded for Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach. This move allows Samanski to continue developing with the Condors, while another veteran could be called up for forward depth.

MARCH 7 • ROTOWIRE

Set for promotion Samanski is expected to be recalled from AHL Bakersfield on Monday, Jason Gregor of Sports 1440 Edmonton reports.

Impact Samanski will replace Andrew Mangiapane, who cleared waivers Monday, on the NHL roster. In his five appearances for the Oilers this season, the 23-year-old Samanski has generated two assists, four hits and one shot while averaging 9:21 of ice time.

Two points in Olympic win Samanski scored a goal and added an assist, both on the power play, in Germany's 5-1 win over France in Olympic qualification round play Tuesday.

Impact The 23-year-old Oilers prospect picked up his first points of the tournament while working on the power play with NHL teammate Leon Draisaitl. Samanski will look to carry that momentum into Wednesday's quarterfinals tilt against Slovakia.

Paper move to AHL Samanski was reassigned to AHL Bakersfield on Wednesday.

Impact This is functionally a paper move, as Samanski will spend the Olympic break in Italy representing Germany. The 23-year-old will need to play in one AHL game before being recalled to the NHL roster, but that's unlikely to happen until the NHL schedule resumes. Given Germany's underdog status, Samanski should have the time to get back to the Condors and get in a game before the Oilers face the Ducks on Feb. 25.
