John Gibson Season Ending Media | April 17, 2026 | Detroit Red Wings John Gibson speaks with the media following the 2025-26 Detroit Red Wings season.
1 DAY AGO • NHL.COM
Gets hook in season finale Gibson gave up four goals on 15 shots before being replaced by Cam Talbot midway through the second period of Wednesday's 8-1 rout at the hands of the Panthers.
Impact The Red Wings apparently hit the links early to close out a massively disappointing season, hanging both their netminders out to dry in the process against a Florida lineup that was missing most of its stars. Gibson has something of a bounce-back campaign in Detroit despite a late fade, with his 29 wins being his highest total since 2017-18 with Anaheim. The 32-year-old goalie has one more year left on his current contract, but he could begin to get phased out next season by the Wings with top prospects Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine both knocking on the door.

Is this the WEIRDEST 1st NHL goal?? 😅

Drawing start against Florida Gibson will defend the road crease in Wednesday's regular-season finale against Florida, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact Gibson hasn't been particularly sharp in recent weeks, going 2-4-1 with a 3.74 GAA and .876 save percentage over his last seven appearances. He made a pair of starts against the Panthers in March and went 0-2-0 with a 3.06 GAA and .880 save percentage.

Gives up four goals Saturday Gibson stopped 28 of 32 shots in Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Devils. The fifth goal he allowed was an empty-netter with 60 seconds left in the game.
Impact The Red Wings' playoff hopes were officially extinguished after Saturday's loss, and while Gibson can't be the one to blame for the poor run in recent games, he certainly deserves some of it. He has lost three of his last four starts, going 1-2-1 with a 3.43 GAA and a subpar .881 save percentage in that span. It remains to be seen if he'll suit up for any of Detroit's final two games -- at Tampa Bay on Monday and at Florida on Wednesday.

In net Saturday Gibson (neck) will protect the home net against New Jersey on Saturday, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.
Impact Gibson will return to the crease after leaving Thursday's 6-3 win over Philadelphia. He has earned a 29-20-4 record this season with a 2.64 GAA and a .904 save percentage across 55 appearances. Since the start of March, the Devils rank fourth in the league with 3.63 goals per game.

Detroit takes on New Jersey after Larkin's hat trick

The Detroit Red Wings host the New Jersey Devils after Dylan Larkin's hat trick against the Philadelphia Flyers in the Red Wings' 6-3 win
APRIL 10 • Associated Press
Dealing with neck stiffness Gibson left Thursday's game versus the Flyers due to neck stiffness after a collision in his crease, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact Head coach Todd McLellan added that Gibson is not in concussion protocol, which is a big positive. Gibson is expected to be fine but will be monitored in the coming days to see how he recovers. It's unclear if he'll be able to play Saturday versus the Devils, but if he's healthy, expect him to be in uniform since the Red Wings are still battling for a playoff spot.

Larkin's hat trick, Seider's career night lead Red Wings to crucial win over Flyers, 6-2

Dylan Larkin had three goals and an assist as the Detroit Red Wings kept their playoff chances alive with a 6-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers

Exits Thursday's game Gibson (undisclosed) left Thursday's game against Philadelphia and is questionable to return.
Impact Gibson stopped 13 of 15 shots before exiting the match midway through the second period. Cam Talbot stepped into the game as a result of Gibson's injury. The Red Wings have been leaning heavily on Gibson, using him in 16 of their past 17 games, including Thursday's action, but if he's forced to miss time, then Talbot will assume the No. 1 duties. Detroit is battling to earn the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. After the tilt against Philadelphia, Detroit will have three games remaining on its regular-season schedule.

Starting Thursday Gibson will patrol the home crease versus Philadelphia on Thursday, per Ansar Khan of MLive.com.
Impact Gibson is 2-5-1 in his last eight starts, as the Red Wings are now chasing a playoff spot. Gibson is 28-20-4 with four shutouts, a 2.63 GAA and a .904 save percentage over 54 games this season. The Flyers have won three games in a row, to move into third place in the Metropolitan Division with four games remaining in the season.

Loses battle in SO Gibson halted 32 of 35 shots on net in Tuesday's 4-3 shootout loss to the Blue Jackets.
Impact Gibson kept Tuesday's contest competitive all the way until the shootout, where he allowed three tallies on five attempts in the losing effort. Overall, the 32-year-old netminder now has a 28-20-4 record, a 2.63 GAA and a .904 save percentage through 54 outings this season. Despite finding the win column just five times in his last 15 outings, Gibson has maintained solid numbers during that span with a .901 save percentage and a 2.77 GAA. He'll likely see a few more starts while the Red Wings vie for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, which would give him a chance to reach the 30-win mark for the second time in his 12-year NHL career.

Tending twine Tuesday Gibson will defend the cage for Tuesday's home clash with the Blue Jackets, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact Gibson appeared in 14 straight games prior to getting the night off versus the Wild on Sunday. In those contests, the Pittsburgh native went 5-8-1 with a 2.77 GAA and one shutout. If Gibson can secure two more wins down the stretch, he will get over the 30-win threshold for the first time since 2017-18 when he was with the Ducks.
APRIL 7 • ROTOWIRE
Not enough support in loss Gibson made 16 saves on 19 shots in Saturday's 4-1 loss to the Rangers. New York's fourth goal was an empty-netter.
Impact Gibson didn't play poorly; Jonathan Quick was simply spectacular at the other end of the rink. And the Red Wings didn't solve Quick until the 19:27 mark of the third. Heading into the game, Detroit was in a four-way tie with Columbus, Ottawa and Philly for the second wild card in the East. Gibson is 1-3-0 in his last four starts with 12 goals allowed. He needs to be near-perfect to help his team get into the postseason.

Red Wings' playoff pursuit takes a hit with a 4-1 loss to the already-eliminated Rangers

Failing to score until there were 32 seconds left, the Detroit Red Wings lost an important game in their pursuit of a playoff spot, 4-1 at the New York Rangers
APRIL 4 • Associated Press
Set to start Saturday Gibson will start Saturday's road game against the Rangers, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact Gibson has gone 2-4-0 with a 3.36 GAA and .884 save percentage over his last six appearances, but he's coming off a win over Anaheim on Thursday in which he allowed just two goals on 34 shots (.941 save percentage). The Rangers are generating 2.82 goals per game this year, which is the ninth-worst mark in the league.
APRIL 3 • ROTOWIRE
Picks up big win Thursday Gibson turned aside 32 shots in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Flyers.
Impact The victory allowed the Red Wings to keep pace with the Senators in the battle for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Gibson has allowed more than three goals only once in his last 10 outings, going 4-5-1 over that stretch with a 2.86 GAA and .899 save percentage. Detroit has seven games left on its schedule, and the veteran netminder needs three more wins to tie the career-high 31 he recorded for Anaheim in 2017-18.
APRIL 3 • ROTOWIRE
Between pipes Thursday Gibson will tend the twine on the road against the Flyers on Thursday, Adam Kimelman of NHL.com reports.
Impact Despite being pulled in two straight contests, Gibson will be making his 13th straight appearance in the crease. During that 12-game stretch, the 32-year-old netminder went 4-7-1 with a 2.80 GAA. An upcoming back-to-back versus the Rangers and Wild on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, should afford Gibson the chance to at least get one game off ahead of a potential postseason run.
APRIL 2 • ROTOWIRE
Pulled once again Gibson was pulled in the first period after allowing three goals on 14 shots in Tuesday's loss to the Penguins.
Impact Gibson was unable to finish a start for a second straight outing, and he's allowed seven goals on 35 shots over that subpar two-game stretch -- good for an underwhelming .800 save percentage. With the way Gibson has been struggling of late, it wouldn't be surprising if he's ticketed for some rest or a straight-up benching when the Red Wings take on the Flyers on Thursday. Gibson has gone 4-7-1 with a 2.81 GAA and an .899 save percentage since the beginning of March, so the struggles are recent and not a sign of a broader issue.
