Announces retirement Fischer announced his retirement from the NHL on Friday, Max Bultman of The Athletic reports.

Impact Fischer played 45 regular-season games with the Red Wings this season before he was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets. The 28-year-old only played once for Columbus as he was a healthy scratch for 20 of the final 21 contests during the regular season. Fischer finishes his career with 62 goals and 75 assists across 523 regular-season appearances for Arizona, Detroit and Columbus.

Limited time with Columbus Fischer has played in just one of the Blue Jackets' 18 games since they claimed him off waivers from the Red Wings on March 6.

Impact The Blue Jackets have gotten healthier at forward since picking up Fischer, who was only ever going to be a bottom-six option anyway. If Columbus gets eliminated from playoff contention, he could get back into the lineup to allow another player to rest. That said, he won't be a fantasy option even if he draws in. He's been limited to seven points, 31 shots on net, 93 hits and a minus-6 rating over 46 appearances this season.

Snatched off waiver wire Fischer was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets on Thursday, Chris Johnston of The Athletic reports.

Impact Perhaps the Red Wings shouldn't have played Fischer in their two games against the Jackets last week, allowing Columbus to get a good look at the 27-year-old. Often a healthy scratch this season, Fischer is currently mired in a 39-game goal drought dating back to Oct. 24 versus the Devils. Even with his new team, Fischer is far from a lock to play on a nightly basis and could still spend some time in the press box periodically.

Put on waivers Fischer was placed on waivers by Detroit on Wednesday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Impact Fischer has a goal, seven points, 11 PIM and 89 hits in 45 appearances with Detroit in 2024-25. Placing him on waivers makes room for Carter Mazur, who the Red Wings are recalling from AHL Grand Rapids.

Impact This was Fischer's first point since Dec. 18. The 27-year-old was scratched for nine of the last 18 games, but he's played in six straight due to the absence of Tyler Motte (upper body). Fischer has just five points with 73 hits, 26 shots on net, 11 PIM and a minus-5 rating over 37 outings this season.
