Rams, Seahawks thin on inactives for COVID-affected showdown

The Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks had only six combined inactive players for their NFC West showdown thanks to two rosters depleted by COVID-19
DECEMBER 21, 2021 • Associated Press
Not available for Week 15 Higbee wasn't activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list and won't be available for Tuesday's game against the Seahawks, Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Higbee is one of nine players on the 53-man roster and 16 in the organization who was unable to clear the necessary COVID-19 protocols for the Week 15 contest, even after the NFL pushed back the game two days from its originally scheduled date. The tight end will be missing his second straight game, after he was previously sidelined for the Week 14 win over the Cardinals for what was later revealed to be a false positive COVID-19 test. Though he was restored to the roster one day after that game against Arizona, Higbee returned to the list three days later, either due to a true positive test or as an unvaccinated close contact of an infected person. In any case, with Higbee missing his second game in a row, the Rams will likely turn to the blocking-oriented Kendall Blanton to make another start at tight end.

The Latest: Broncos' Bridgewater taken off on stretcher

Joins teammates on COVID-19 list Higbee was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday.
Impact The timing will make it difficult for Higbee to play, even with the Week 15 matchup against Seattle pushed back to Tuesday on account of the Rams' COVID-19 outbreak. It's been a frustrating week for the tight end, as he missed Monday's win over the Cardinals due to what was later deemed a false positive. He's now back on the reserve/COVID-19 list, along with a slew of teammates, including reserve tight ends Brycen Hopkins and Johnny Mundt. As of Friday afternoon, Kendall Blanton was the only TE remaining on L.A.'s active roster.

Officially off COVID-19 list Higbee was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday.
Impact Initially, Higbee returned a positive test for COVID-19, but a pair of subsequent negative tests proved it to be a false positive, coach Sean McVay told Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News. Still, due to league protocols, Higbee was forced to sit out Monday's win at Arizona. The Rams' organization is currently in intensive protocols due to a number of players landing on the COVID-19 list in recent days, so it remains to be seen when Higbee will be able to rejoin his teammates on the practice field.

False positive for COVID-19 Higbee's positive test for COVID-19 has been deemed a false positive, Kevin Modesti of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.
Impact Higbee thus is not considered to have actually tested positive for the virus, despite numerous teammates recently doing so. That likely leaves a good chance for him to suit up Sunday against the Seahawks. Look for the tight end's activation from the Reserve/COVID-19 list to be forthcoming, though there's no need to rush the move with the Rams' facility shut down at the moment.

Rams LB Hollins, Cards OL Pugh active for Monday's game

Arizona Cardinals offensive lineman Justin Pugh and Los Angeles linebacker Justin Hollins are active for Monday night’s game against the Los Angeles Rams

Out Monday, may be activated Tuesday Higbee has been ruled out ahead of Monday's game against the Cardinals following his placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list, but he could be eligible to return to the active roster...
Impact According to Schefter, Higbee's placement on the list was the result of an initial positive test, but the tight end proceeded to test negative for the virus twice thereafter. That would seemingly lend credence to the idea that the initial result was a false positive, but because the Rams couldn't confirm as much prior to Monday's 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff, Higbee will have to sit out his first game of the season. Kendall Blanton is the next man up on the depth chart behind Higbee and profiles as the Rams' best blocking tight end, while Brycen Hopkins and the newly promoted Jared Pinkney represent greater pass-catching threats at the position.

Out Monday due to COVID protocols Higbee won't be available for Monday's game against the Cardinals after the Rams placed him on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
Impact Higbee and cornerback Jalen Ramsey were placed on the list in the hours leading up to the 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff, leaving the Rams without two key starters. They become the fifth players to be placed on the list within the last few days, joining running back Darrell Henderson, offensive tackle Rob Havenstein and cornerback Donte Deayon. The team hasn't revealed whether Higbee or Ramsey tested positive for the virus, or if they were deemed close contacts of an infected person. In any case, Higbee will sit out his first game of the season Monday, and his status for Los Angeles' Week 15 game against the Seahawks is also in question. Kendall Blanton is the next man up at tight end, and rookie Brycen Hopkins could also be called upon to cover some of Higbee's vacated snaps.

Reliable underneath Higbee caught five passes for 48 yards on six targets against Jacksonville on Sunday.
Impact Higbee did his part to stabilize the Rams' passing game and move the chains Sunday, though the lack of explosiveness has proven a constant limitation in his box scores throughout the year. The 48 yards is his third-highest single-game yardage total of the season, with his highest mark being just 68 yards in Week 1. This usage tendency generally leaves Higbee dependent on touchdowns for useful fantasy point totals, but with just three on the year it's difficult to count on Higbee offsetting his modest yardage totals with scoring production. The Rams go to Arizona to face the Cardinals in Week 14, and in their Week 4 matchup Higbee caught four passes for 36 yards on six targets.
