INJURIES

Competition arrives Conklin (hamstring) is facing increased competition for snaps with the Vikings having traded for tight end Chris Herndon from the Jets, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Conklin looks set to begin the regular season in a starting role while Irv Smith (knee) recovers from surgery, but it appears that the Vikings desire more security at the tight end position during that time. The severity of Smith's meniscus injury remains undisclosed, and there's a chance it could be season-ending, so the acquisition of Herndon could speak as much about those worries as concerns about Conklin's skill set. In any case, Herndon is coming off back-to-back disappointing seasons in New York and now faces the task of learning a new offense, so as long as Conklin can shake his hamstring injury, he'll remain on track to start Sept. 12's season opener in Cincinnati.

Headed for Week 1 start Conklin (hamstring) is scheduled to return to practice Monday, while fellow Vikings tight end Irv Smith needs knee surgery, Chad Graff of The Athletic reports.
Impact There's a chance Smith's surgery is season-ending, if it ends up being a meniscus repair rather than a meniscectomy/debridement. Meanwhile, Conklin's return Monday puts him on track for the start Week 1 at Cincinnati, after missing the past two weeks of practice and the final two preseason games. His solid performance last year had him locked in for the No. 2 spot at tight end this season, but while the Vikings may be comfortable using Conklin as a fill-in starter, Zimmer acknowledged Monday that he's worried about depth. He's right to be concerned, as the Vikings now have only a rookie fifth-round pick (Zach Davidson) and two undrafted young players (Brandon Dillon, Shane Zylstra) behind Conklin, who himself had caught just 13 passes in 39 NFL games before he took on a larger role around Week 10 last year. Even so, Conklin could have short-term fantasy value if he defaults to a three-down role in what should be a solid offense.

Chance to fill in for Smith Conklin, who hasn't played during the preseason as he deals with a hamstring injury, has a chance to see an expanded role, health permitting, with Irv Smith (knee) expected to miss...
Impact With Kyle Rudolph no longer in the mix, Smith had been viewed as a possible fantasy break-out candidate in 2021. With that potential outcome on hold, Conklin could emerge as an option in deeper formats early on this season. Meanwhile, Brandon Dillon, Zach Davidson and Shane Zylstra are also currently in the Vikings' tight end mix.

Dealing with minor injury Conklin suffered a mild hamstring injury Monday, Ben Goessling of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Impact The tight end left practice early with a trainer but reportedly isn't expected to be out too long. Conklin is the Vikings' No. 2 tight end, with his solid performance late last season perhaps making it easier for the team to move on from Kyle Rudolph (now with the Giants) in the offseason. The role may entail only 2-4 targets per game, but Conklin could establish mainstream fantasy value if starter Irv Smith misses any time.
AUGUST 17, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Returns from ankle injury Conklin (ankle) returned to practice Thursday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Impact Conklin was held out Monday through Wednesday with a minor injury. His cameo in the No. 2 TE spot went well at the end of last season, and he now figures to handle that role on a more permanent basis after the Vikings parted ways with Kyle Rudolph in the offseason. Conklin could even have mainstream fantasy relevance at some point this year if starting tight end Irv Smith misses time.

Misses third straight practice Conklin (ankle) isn't practicing Wednesday, Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Impact Conklin initially missed practice Monday but told reporters his ankle injury isn't serious. He's expected to work as Minnesota's No. 2 tight end, a role that could entail playing more than half the snaps on offense, though the team did add some depth at wide receiver after losing TE Kyle Rudolph. With Conklin temporary unavailable, rookie fifth-round pick Zach Davidson should get a few more practice reps.

Impact With the departure of Kyle Rudolph, Conklin looks set to move up the depth chart and be used next to Irv Smith in two-tight end sets. Conklin had 15 receptions for 168 yards and a score over the last four games when Rudolph was out with an injury, supporting the notion he could carve out a role in the passing offense this season. Still, Conklin may be used more as a blocker with Smith likely to command most of the targets to the position.
JUNE 18, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Finishes season with 19 receptions Conklin completed the 2020 campaign catching 19 of his 26 targets for 194 yards and one touchdown.
Impact In his third season with the Vikings, the 2018 fifth-round pick had career highs in receptions and yards. The tight end also scored his first NFL touchdown and began to show his ability as a pass catcher toward the end of the regular season after No. 2 tight end Kyle Rudolph (foot) landed on IR. With Rudolph under contract through 2023 and 2019 second-rounder Irv Smith ahead of him on the depth chart, Conklin will have difficulty being a regular in Minnesota's offense as he enters the final year of his rookie deal.
JANUARY 15, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Makes impact again in loss Conklin secured three of four targets for 57 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' 33-27 loss to the Bears on Sunday.
Impact The 25-year-old had a presence on the stat sheet for the second straight week, following up his solid 5-40 line against the Buccaneers with Sunday's showing, which included his first career touchdown. Conklin's elevated role over the last pair of contests is a direct byproduct of the absence of Kyle Rudolph (foot), so it would be difficult to trust it continuing were his veteran teammate to return for a Week 16 matchup against the Saints on Christmas Day.

Five receptions Sunday Conklin had five receptions for 40 yards on five targets in Sunday's 26-14 loss to Tampa Bay.
Impact Conklin played a season-high 45 snaps with Kyle Rudolph sidelined with a foot injury. He played more snaps than Irv Smith (28), but that may be only because Smith was coming back after missing two games with a back injury. Conklin could continue to be part of the passing game if Rudolph is out another week, but it won't be a surprise if Smith overtakes him for playing time.

Gains 10 yards in win Conklin caught his lone target for 10 yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win against the Jaguars.
Impact With Irv Smith (back) inactive, Conklin logged a season-high 59 snaps on offense (65 percent), landing just five snaps shy of Kyle Rudolph, who finished with no receptions on two targets. Conklin's getting plenty of usage when Smith is out of the lineup. If Smith returns in Week 14 against the Buccaneers, Conklin will shift back to a reserve role.
DECEMBER 8, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Makes two grabs Conklin caught both of his targets for 11 yards in Monday night's 19-13 win over the Bears.
Impact Conklin moved up the depth chart with Irv Smith (groin) sidelined and made his first couple receptions of the campaign. Should Smith remain out Sunday versus the Cowboys, Conklin would figure to assume a similar role, boosting his value despite his still-restricted ceiling.

No touches Sunday Conklin did not have a target in Sunday's loss to Green Bay. He played just eight snaps on offense.
Impact With both Kyle Rudolph and Irv Smith, Jr. healthy, Conklin is going to have a minimal role on offense and will get most of his snaps (12 on Sunday) on special teams.
