Back at practice
Sweeney (undisclosed) was participating at minicamp Wednesday, Mark Gaughan of The Buffalo News reports.
Impact
Sweeney was held out of practice last week due to an unspecified injury, but he's been able to retake the field. The 26-year-old appeared in 13 games for the Bills last season and caught nine passes for 44 yards and one touchdown, and he should enter 2022 as the No. 3 option at tight end behind Dawson Knox and O.J. Howard.

Sidelined with injury
Sweeney (undisclosed) did not participate in Tuesday's training session, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Impact

Path to targets gets murkier
Sweeney appears to be the No. 3 tight end on the depth chart following Buffalo's signing of O.J. Howard this week.
Impact
Dawson Knox will remain the starter, but Howard has a stronger skillset and more NFL experience than Sweeney, so the latter is now the No. 3 entering offseason work. After catching just 17 balls over his first two NFL seasons, the 2019 seventh-rounder may have some work to do just to make the team.

ROTOWIRE
Maintains clear-cut backup role
Sweeney played in 13 games during the 2021 regular season, catching nine of 12 targets for 44 yards and one touchdown.
Impact
Top tight end Dawson Knox sat out two games due to injury in the middle of the season, but even when he was moved into an elevated role in his stead, Sweeney proved he's nowhere near the pass catcher that Knox is. While taking on a 34 percent snap share for the season, Sweeney was mostly utilized for his blocking skills and not his hands. Knox isn't going anywhere since he's now at or near the upper echelon of NFL tight ends, so the best Sweeney can hope for is that the Bills don't bring in too much competition this offseason. After missing all of 2020 due to a heart condition related to COVID-19, Sweeney's best performance in any game since his 2019 rookie campaign is a modest 3-30-0 receiving line in Week 8 this past season.

To sit against Pats
Sweeney appears to be a healthy scratch Week 16 against New England.
Impact
Sweeney logged 22 offensive snaps last week against Carolina despite dealing with a hip injury for the past several weeks. While he avoided the injury report this week, the tight end ultimately won't be suiting up on game day. Since Week 10, Sweeney has seen a combined two targets on offense, becoming largely an afterthought when starter Dawson Knox is healthy.

Will play Sunday
Sweeny (hip) will play Sunday against the Panthers.
Impact
Sweeny was able to log a full practice Friday and has been removed from the injury report going into Sunday against the Panthers. Despite being second on the tight end positional depth chart, Sweeney plays a limited role in the Bills' offense.

Ruled out for Week 14
Sweeney (hip) is ruled out for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Sweeney will miss his first game of the season due to a hip injury. The third-year tight end has only drawn one target in his last four appearances, so his absence may not have much of an impact on the involvement of Dawson Knox, but the Bills will likely now need to bring at least one of Quintin Morris or Kahale Warring up from the practice squad.

Misses practice with hip issue
Sweeney didn't participate in Thursday's practice due to a hip injury, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Sweeney was previously listed as a limited participant on the Bills' initial Week 14 injury report, so it's unclear if he took a step back in his recovery from the injury a day later or if his absence was a pre-planned maintenance day. In any case, Sweeney's profile in the Buffalo offense has taken a hit since top tight end Dawson Knox returned from a two-game absence Week 10. After playing at least 80 percent of the offensive snaps in both of the games Knox was out while recording five receptions for 40 yards during that time, Sweeney has played fewer than a third of the snaps in the subsequent four contests and has been targeted just once.

Little production in second start
Sweeney caught both of his targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 9-6 loss to the Jaguars.
Impact
While the second-year man played a season-high 86 percent of the offensive snaps, he simply isn't being used as a pass-catching threat in the same way the injured Dawson Knox (hand) had been. With Knox scheduled to return to practice Wednesday, Sweeney's days of even modest production could be about to end. While he's a good depth guy for the Bills, he only has nine catches for 44 yards and a score in 2021.

Another start awaits
Sweeney is expected to make a second straight start Sunday against the Jaguars after head coach Sean McDermott ruled out No. 1 tight end Dawson Knox (hand) for the contest, Chris J...
Impact
Sweeney was the primary replacement for Knox in last week's 26-11 win over the Dolphins, finishing the day with a 3-30-0 receiving line on four targets. Though his statistics weren't anything special, Sweeney's underlying usage last week could make him an intriguing sleeper at tight end in season-long leagues or DFS contests in a favorable matchup against the 1-6 Jaguars. He was on the field for 80 percent of the Bills' offensive snaps Week 8, ran routes on 77 percent of the Bills' passing plays, and drew three of his four targets in the red zone.

Modest production as Knox sub
Sweeney caught three of four targets for 30 yards in Sunday's 26-11 win over Miami.
Impact
Sweeney saw 82 percent of the offensive snaps as the No. 1 tight end while starter Dawson Knox heals up from a broken hand. Knox, currently labeled day-to-day by coach Sean McDermott, could return within the next game or two, so Sweeney's window of opportunity may be closing quickly. Even if Knox needs to sit out another week, Sweeney seems like more of a touchdown-dependent option on a team with plenty of other weapons.

In line to fill in for Knox
Sweeney is in line for added opportunities Sunday against the Dolphins with Dawson Knox (hand) having been ruled out for the contest.
Impact
Knox, who has recorded a 21-286-5 stat line through six games, underwent hand surgery during the Bills' bye week and while coach Sean McDermott hasn't provided a timetable for his return, it's plausible that Sweeney will fill in as Buffalo's top tight end beyond Week 8. Though WRs Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis could see added looks while Knox is out, Sweeney -- who has recorded just four catches and one TD this season -- is the player who should see the biggest uptick in production in the meantime, making him an option for those in deeper leagues scrambling for tight end depth due to injury or bye week concerns.

ROTOWIRE
Opportunity may lie ahead
Sweeney scored his first NFL touchdown on a one-yard catch during Monday's 34- 31 loss to the Titans.
Impact
Sweeney only saw 11 offensive snaps, but his usage could make a big leap if Dawson Knox (fractured hand) misses games. The Bills are on bye this week and don't currently have a healthy tight end besides Sweeney, though fullback Reggie Gilliam is more of a hybrid player that can serve some tight end duties. Given the big-strike offense Buffalo runs, those in deeper leagues should keep an eye on the situation -- specifically Knox's status -- ahead of the Bills' Week 8 tilt against the Dolphins.
