Likely out four weeks
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Coleman (knee) likely will sit out four weeks and is a candidate to be placed on injured reserve, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Both Coleman and Raheem Mostert picked up sprained knees this past Sunday against the Jets, and Shanahan indicated the former's injury is worse than the latter's, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. With a roster move expected to occur at some point this week, the 49ers backfield may be whittled down to just Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson in the short term.

Expected to miss a few weeks
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Coleman (knee) is expected to miss "multiple weeks," Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact
Coleman picked up his knee injury Week 2 versus the Jets, a contest wherein backfield mate Raheem Mostert (knee) also suffered a sprained MCL that's expected to sideline him for Sunday's game against the Giants. If Coleman and Mostert are both held out versus New York, Jerick McKinnon will slot in as the lead option in San Francisco's backfield. Jeff Wilson also stands to see occasional carries and red-zone work, and the 49ers may promote JaMycal Hasty from the practice squad. Depending on the severity of Coleman's injury, he could be an option for injured reserve.

Hurts knee in Week 2 win
Coleman left Sunday's 31-13 win over the Jets due to a knee injury, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports. He rushed 14 times for 12 yards and caught both of his targets for 28 yard...
Impact
After having his Week 1 workload limited for precautionary reasons due to the poor air quality in the San Francisco area, Coleman had more than half of the team's 27 carries as Raheem Mostert (knee) exited at halftime. If Mostert or Coleman can't go against the Giants in Week 3, Jerick McKinnon would lead the 49ers' run-heavy attack, with Jeff Wilson also mixing in.

Receives five touches in opener
Coleman carried four times for 18 yards and caught one of two targets for six additional yards during Sunday's 24-20 loss to the Cardinals.
Impact
Coleman considered sitting out Sunday's game due to a preexisting condition that could've been exacerbated by the poor air quality but decided to ultimately suit up. He watched as Raheem Mostert took on the majority of the workload out of the backfield while accounting for 151 scrimmage yards. Coleman's track record of inefficiency could catch up to him this season, as Mostert has already staked his claim to the lead back role and he will also have to contend with Jerick McKinnon for touches. He should play a similar role next Sunday against the Jets.

Suiting up Week 1
Coleman (personal) is active for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
There was talk of Coleman taking a seat in the opener due to a preexisting condition, as the air quality index in Santa Clara is particularly high at the moment. Having said that, the 49ers won't err on the side of caution, and Coleman will be available to the backfield Week 1. He may merely be insurance, though, with the rest of the team's running backs (Raheem Mostert, Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson) healthy and available.

Could be game-time call Week 1
Coleman appears to be trending toward a game-time decision Sunday against the Cardinals, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Impact
Coleman has a preexisting health condition, and the air quality index in Santa Clara is ringing in at 171 on Sunday morning. He was already deemed uncertain to play if that number is above 150, and the game itself may be postponed if it rises above 200. As a result, Coleman doesn't seem likely to suit up Week 1, which would allow Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson to get more work behind starter Raheem Mostert.

Could sit out due to air quality
Coleman was held out of Friday's practice due to a preexisting health condition, and he could miss Sunday's game against the Cardinals if the air quality index (AQI) in Santa Clara...
Impact
There's even some concern about the game being relocated or postponed if the AQI is above 200 on Sunday. Coleman, who has sickle cell trait, could opt to sit out if the AQI is somewhere in the 150-200 range. The 49ers would then turn to Jerick McKinnon and Jeff Wilson as their depth options in the backfield behind Raheem Mostert.

Healthy following offseason surgery
Coleman has completely recovered from offseason shoulder surgery, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.
Impact
Coleman suffered the shoulder injury deep into the 49ers' unsuccessful bid for a championship last season, and the surgery reportedly went off without a hitch. Maiocco also mentions that the veteran tailback was contemplating sitting out the 2020 season due to his sickle cell trait potentially posing a greater risk if he contracted COVID-19. Coleman ultimately decided to play with the support of his family behind him. The 27-year-old rushed for 544 yards (4.0 yards per carry) and six touchdowns over 14 regular-season games in 2019. Coleman will resume his role as part of a run-heavy backfield committee spearheaded by Raheem Mostert under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
