GAME LOG

INJURIES

Will sit out Monday McKinley (groin) has been ruled out for Monday's game versus the Packers, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
Impact McKinley will watch from the sidelines for a second straight week. In Week 3, Steven Means was the only Falcons defensive end to log more than 50 percent of the defensive snaps, so expect a similar rotation among Means, Dante Fowler, Allen Bailey and Charles Harris until McKinley returns.

Sits out practice with groin injury McKinley (groin) did not practice Thursday, Will McFadden of the team's official site reports.
Impact McKinley also missed practice all of last week before being declared inactive for Sunday's game against the Bears. Unless he's able to take a significant step forward, it looks as though the starting defensive end is trending in the wrong direction for Week 4.

Unable to play Sunday McKinley (groin) is inactive for Sunday's game versus the Bears.
Impact McKinley had a strong start to the season, posting seven tackles (four solo), a sack and a pass breakup through two contests. When he exited early in Week 2, both Allen Bailey and Steven Means logged hefty workloads and are expected to operate in similar roles Sunday.

Listed as DNP all week McKinley (groin) is considered questionable for Sunday's game versus the Bears, Will McFadden of the Falcons' official site reports.
Impact Since McKinley didn't practice all week, he's trending in the wrong direction ahead of Week 3's NFC matchup. With Dante Fowler (ankle) also questionable, the Falcons could be without their starting defensive ends, which would open the door for Allen Bailey and Steven Means to bump into starting roles.

Not practicing Wednesday McKinley (groin) did not practice Wednesday, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
Impact McKinley left Sunday's loss to the Cowboys due to a groin injury, but coach Dan Quinn downplayed the severity of his issue after the contest. Still, it remains be seen whether the fourth-year pro will manage to return against the Bears in Week 3. Jacob Tuioti-Mariner and Allen Bailey stand to handle increased rotational roles in the event that McKinley is forced to miss any time.
SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Injury shouldn't be serious Coach Dan Quinn doesn't believe McKinley (groin) has a serious injury, Tori McElhaney of The Athletic reports.
Impact While McKinley isn't expected to be out long term, Quinn stopped short of saying the DE would be ready for Week 3 versus the Bears. Jacob Tuioti-Mariner and Allen Bailey rotated in McKinley's stead and would likely serve in similar roles if McKinley is forced to miss any time.

Questionable to return McKinley (groin) limped off the field during the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Cowboys and his return is questionable, Kelsey Conway of the Falcons' official site repo...
Impact McKinley had been looking like a man on a mission through the first four and a half quarters of 2020, registering seven QB hits and one sack after the Falcons turned down the edge rusher's fifth-year option in April. Early in Week 2 he pulled up while rushing Dak Prescott, and he has yet to reappear on the field. If the 24-year-old is unable to return Week 2, veteran defensive end Allen Bailey will see an uptick in usage.
SEPTEMBER 20, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Kicks off contract year with sack McKinley collected five tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass deflection, and one sack during Sunday's 38-25 loss to the Seahawks.
Impact The fourth-year edge rusher enjoyed a comprehensively-dominant performance, as he also racked up an incredible six QB hits on Russell Wilson during the contest. McKinley certainly knows how to get to the quarterback, as evidenced by his 28 QB hits the past two seasons, but the key to unlocking a lucrative free-agent deal will be closing on those opportunities in 2020. Better yet, if McKinley can consistently become a presence in defending opposing ground attacks as he was Sunday, he has the potential to become an all-around defensive stalwart.

Falcons make final cuts to set 53-man roster for opener

The Atlanta Falcons cut former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell and two quarterbacks as they got down to the 53-man roster limit for the regular season
SEPTEMBER 5, 2020 • Associated Press
Puts in limited Sunday session McKinley took part in individual work, but sat out team drills during Sunday's practice, Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com reports.
Impact The 24-year-old's restricted workload does not appear directly related to a recent injury, but the decision is instead said to be a concerted effort to keep McKinley fresh coming off of his January shoulder surgery. McKinley is a key component to the Falcons' hopes of improving upon a 31st-place finish in team sacks, which may have led to the coaching staff's decision. He now joins Todd Gurley and Alex Mack as veterans who have so far had their workloads occasionally limited in camp for the purposes of "workload management."

Lighter going into year four McKinley has lightened his build over the offseason to better utilize his speed off the edge, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Impact The 2017 first-round pick showed flashes of brilliance during the early stages of his Falcons tenure, registering 15 sacks across the first 33 regular-season and postseason outings of his career. During a make-or-break 2019, however, McKinley struggled with an ever-lingering shoulder injury and only registered 3.5 sacks across 14 appearances. McKinley had his fifth-year option declined by the team in April as a result, providing ample financial incentive for the 24-year-old as he enters a contract season.
