INJURIES

Returning to 49ers Dwelley signed a one-year contract to return to the 49ers on Monday.
Impact Dwelley wasn't particularly involved in San Francisco's offensive scheme in 2021, as he logged only 185 snaps with the unit. However, he remained a key part of the special-teams group. He should maintain the latter role, but he could also move up the tight end depth chart if either George Kittle or Charlie Woerner suffers an injury.

Finishes year as third TE Dwelley had four receptions for 51 yards and a touchdown across 17 games during the 2021 regular season.
Impact Dwelley was usurped by Charlie Woerner as the primary backup behind George Kittle, resulting in barely any usage offensively. The 26-year-old will be an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason, but he is unlikely to land anywhere that provides fantasy value in 2022.

Falls to second on depth chart Dwelley had one reception (two targets) for five yards in Sunday's 30-18 loss to the Colts.
Impact Charlie Woerner (30 snaps) officially got the start for the first time this season, but Dwelley stuck around as "co-starter" with 27 offensive snaps logged (48 percent). The former is the more athletic option -- as evidenced by his greater production with the same amount of targets -- but neither is really a fantasy option at this point. The tight end duo will fill in for George Kittle (calf) for at least one more game while the star mends on IR.

Catches both targets Dwelley caught two of two targets for 25 yards against Arizona on Sunday.
Impact Dwelley wasn't anywhere near as prominent in the passing game as the injured George Kittle (calf) typically is, but there's nothing surprising about that. Kittle can't be imitated, of course, and Dwelley had only one target in 2021 before drawing two Sunday. He'll need to play more as long as Kittle is out, but he likely has fantasy appeal only in deep fantasy formats.
OCTOBER 11, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Added opportunities with Kittle on IR With George Kittle (calf) having landed on IR, Dwelley is in line to head the 49ers' tight end corps for the team's next three games.
Impact Kittle is reportedly likely to return from IR when he's eligible, but for the 49ers' next three games, Dwelley is in line to see added snaps and targets, with Charlie Woerner and Tanner Hudson? in the mix on that front as well. Though Dwelley can't be expected to approach Kittle's level of production, he's nonetheless an option for those scrambling for fantasy tight end depth for the next few weeks.
OCTOBER 9, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Likely to start for Kittle Dwelley is expected to start at tight end and see an uptick in snaps Sunday against the Cardinals with George Kittle (calf) listed as doubtful for the game.
Impact Kittle has been sidelined for only a handful of plays through the 49ers' first four games, leaving few reps left over for Dwelley and Charlie Woerner, the two reserve options at tight end. Neither player can come close to matching Kittle's impact as a pass catcher, but Dwelley projects as the more fantasy friendly option of the two, given that he's drawn 25 targets in 20 games over the past season and change compared to just four for Woerner. Dwelley, who turned his lone target of 2021 into a 21-yard touchdown Week 4 against the Seahawks, shouldn't be viewed as much more than a desperation streamer at tight end in deeper season-long leagues or as a punt play in DFS.

First catch goes for a score Dwelley caught his lone target for a 21-yard touchdown in Sunday's 28-21 loss to the Seahawks.
Impact Dwelley got the scoring going on a seam route where he boxed out his assignment and corralled the pass for a touchdown. It was the backup tight end's first catch (and target) through four games, which emphasizes his role -- or lack thereof -- on offense while George Kittle is active.

Inks extension Dwelley signed a one-year extension with San Francisco on Friday.
Impact Following three solid seasons in San Francisco to start his career, Dwelley has demonstrated enough to earn an extension. The 26-year-old filled the No. 2 tight end role behind George Kittle in 2020 and played significant snaps during the latter's eight absences, catching 19 of his 24 targets for 245 yards and a touchdown.
MARCH 5, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Sees limited action as backup Dwelley finished with 19 receptions for 245 yards and a touchdown with the 49ers in 2020.
Impact The 25-year-old began the year third on the depth chart behind star tight end George Kittle and newly acquired veteran Jordan Reed. Dwelley still saw an increase in both playing time (500 offensive snaps) and production after the rest of the tight end room dealt with injuries at various points during the season. Kittle is here to stay and Reed will be an unrestricted free agent this upcoming offseason, so the 49ers' decision regarding the latter will impact whether or not Dwelley will be extended past his expiring rookie contract for the 2021 season.
FEBRUARY 2, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
28 yards vs. Dallas Dwelley caught both of his targets for 28 yards in Sunday's 41-33 loss to the Cowboys.
Impact Dwelley continues to start games for San Francisco while George Kittle (foot) remains on IR. The 25-year-old logged 46 offensive snaps (55 percent) compared to backup tight end Jordan Reed's 42 (50 percent), but the latter saw three extra targets and caught a touchdown pass. Reed is the more desirable fantasy asset due to his superior receiving capabilities, but neither is a must-start in standard fantasy formats heading into a Week 16 matchup with the Cardinals.
DECEMBER 21, 2020 • ROTOWIRE
Two catches in loss Dwelley secured both of his targets for 20 yards in Sunday's 23-15 loss to Washington.
Impact Dwelley started and logged 36 offensive snaps (44 percent) compared to co-starter Jordan Reed's 33 snaps (41 percent). The 25-year-old finished with the most receiving yards of his position group for the first time since Week 9, highlighting his preferred usage as a blocker. Dwelley should continue to start in place of George Kittle, who remains sidelined with a foot injury, but Reed has the higher fantasy upside heading into Sunday's contest with the Cowboys.
