How Will Seahawks Handle Running Backs Rashaad Penny and Kenneth Walker?
With Chris Carson retiring, Seattle’s backfield looks like a committee of two.

Competition clearer sans Carson
Penny will compete with Kenneth Walker for the starting running back job following Tuesday's report that Chris Carson (neck) will retire, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Penny, Carson and Walker, a rookie second-round pick, had all been viewed as candidates for the gig heading into training camp. While Penny's strong finish to the 2021 campaign made him the favorite to remain the top option on the depth chart, Carson's presence as a bruiser with pass-catching capabilities could have cut into Penny's workload. Now, Walker -- who may need time to develop his skills on passing downs -- will be Penny's main competition during the preseason. Of course, Penny's health is a concern of his own, considering he played only 23 games over the last three seasons. However, he finished the past season with 671 rushing yards (7.3 per carry) and five touchdowns over the final five games, showcasing the elite upside he brings to the table when he's available.

Projected for starting duties
Penny is expected to be the Seahawks' primary running back in 2022, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact
Of course, this includes the caveat that Penny stays healthy, which is a legitimate concern because he's been active for just 23 games over the last three seasons. However, the 2018 first-round pick is healthy heading into training camp. After rushing for 671 yards (7.3 YPC) and six touchdowns over the final five games last year, Penny doesn't need to prove much in training camp to win the starting job over rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker, and Chris Carson's (neck) odds of being cleared are increasingly pessimistic.

Back at practice
Penny (hamstring) participated in Tuesday's practice, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact
Penny sat out of OTAs last week due to a slight hamstring issue, so it's encouraging to see him back at practice, even if it was a lighter session. The 2018 first-round pick finished last season with 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns -- all career highs -- and figures to be a vital piece for the Seahawks in 2022. Penny and second-round pick Kenneth Walker are currently the top healthy options in Seattle's backfield with Chris Carson still nursing a delicate neck injury.

Nursing hamstring injury
Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that Penny is resting a slight hamstring issue during the start of Seattle's voluntary OTAs, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.
Impact
Penny agreed to a one-year, $5.75 million contract this offseason to return to Seattle after finishing with 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns -- all career highs -- across 10 appearances last season. If healthy, Chris Carson (neck) is a candidate to lead the backfield in 2022, but the Seahawks have hinted that they have doubts he'll be ready for the start of the regular season, per Gregg Bell of The Tacoma News Tribune. In any case, Penny and second-round pick Kenneth Walker are the current healthy options for the starting job. Regardless, Penny, a 2018 first-rounder, appears to be a vital piece to Seattle's backfield moving forward, so the team likely will be cautious with his minor hamstring injury this offseason.

Joined by rookie in backfield

Impact
Prior to the draft, Penny's main competition was set to be Chris Carson, but the Seahawks have hinted that they have doubts about Carson's ability to return from a neck injury, Gregg Bell of The News Tribune reports. Penny has never had a fully healthy season, either. Thus, it's not surprising that the Seahawks utilized a draft pick to bring in another running back, but utilizing this high of a pick signals that the Seahawks believe Walker can be their starter at some point. Nevertheless, it's Penny's job to lose. His production last season was undisputable, as he rumbled for 692 total yards and six touchdowns over the final five games. If Penny can stay healthy, we may witness a situation similar to 2018 when Penny was a rookie first-round pick but Carson -- the second-year player -- never gave up the starting job.
