Has high-ankle sprain, likely IR-bound Coach Kyle Shanahan told Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com that Mostert has been diagnosed with a high left ankle sprain and "most likely" will be placed on injured reserve.
Impact Mostert sat out Weeks 3 and 4 with a sprained MCL and now is poised to miss at least three more games due to the ankle issue that forced him out of Sunday's win against the Rams. Shanahan also mentioned Tevin Coleman (knee) is a "long shot" to be activated from IR this week, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic, leaving Jerick McKinnon, JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson (calf) as the likely running backs available to the 49ers offense this coming Sunday at New England.

Impact Mostert appeared to tweak his ankle on a catch late in the first half, and he was ruled out in the third quarter, leaving Jerick McKinnon to operate as San Francisco's lead back for the rest of the contest. This is the latest injury setback for Mostert, who returned from a knee injury last week. Mostert was busy prior to exiting, with 17 carries for 65 yards and two catches for 11 yards. Totals 119 scrimmage yards Mostert carried 11 times for 90 yards and added 29 yards on three receptions (three targets) during Sunday's 43-17 loss to the Dolphins.
Impact Mostert gashed the Dolphins defense for 8.2 yards per carry but saw his work on the ground limited by a surprisingly lopsided scoreline. He produced effectively with the targets he received but didn't have many red zone opportunities as C.J. Beathard replaced Jimmy Garoppolo in the second half. Most importantly, Mostert looked strong after recovering from a recent knee injury and will hope for a more favorable game script in next Sunday's matchup with the Rams.

Impact Mostert missed the 49ers' previous two games with a sprained MCL in his knee, but he took a step forward this week by practicing on a limited basis Wednesday through Friday. Though his status may not be firmly decided until the 49ers have a chance to evaluate him in a pregame workout, Mostert looks like he'll be ready to suit up Week 5. However, given the time he's missed of late along with the fact that he didn't return to full speed for practice, Mostert could handle a more limited role than usual if he avoids the inactive list, which the 49ers will release approximately 90 minutes prior to the 4:05 p.m. ET kickoff. If Mostert's role is restricted in any way, Jerick McKinnon could remain a prominent part of the 49ers' backfield rotation.
