Packers add depth at tight end by signing veteran Jonnu Smith to 1-year deal

The Green Bay Packers have addressed their depth issues at tight end by signing veteran Jonnu Smith to a one-year contract
3 DAYS AGO • Associated Press
Brief absence Whyle (neck) is back practicing Tuesday, Weston Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports.
Impact Whyle was absent from practice Sunday due a neck injury, but the absence was short-lived. The 26-year-old has appeared to emerge as the tight end No. 3 for Green Bay, but he will now be back to taking first-team reps while Tucker Kraft (knee) and Luke Musgrave (neck) continue to rehab their respective injuries.

Dealing with minor neck issue Whyle (neck) did not participate in Sunday's practice, Ryan Wood of USA Today reports.
Impact It is unclear when Whyle suffered the neck injury, but the team does not consider the issue a long-term problem. With Tucker Kraft (knee) and Luke Musgrave (neck) still absent due to injury, Whyle's return would once again make him the starting tight end for the time being. As of now, tight end No. 4 Drake Dabney is set to take the starting snaps.
AUGUST 9 • ROTOWIRE
Emerging as No. 3 tight end Whyle "took significant snaps with the starters" during OTAs and seems to be in line for the Packers' No. 3 tight-end role, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports.
Impact Whyle wasn't able to make Tennessee's season-opening roster last year and subsequently joined Green Bay's practice squad. He was eventually signed to the active roster after Tucker Kraft (knee) was lost for the season but didn't make much of an impact on offense, catching just five passes on six targets for 36 yards and a touchdown. Kraft recently stated that he expects to be ready for Week 1, and Luke Musgrave (undisclosed) is likely to take the No. 2 tight-end job, but Whyle currently appears to have a good chance of making the roster as the No. 3 tight end. That wouldn't necessarily portend fantasy-relevant production, though it would put him in line for meaningful snaps if Kraft and/or Musgrave needed to miss time.

Sees more snaps after Kraft injury Whyle logged five catches (on six targets) for 36 yards and a touchdown across eight regular-season games with the Packers in 2025.
Impact Whyle spent the first half of the season on the Packers' practice squad after failing to make the Titans' 53-man roster at the end of training camp. There wasn't a path to playing time for the third-year tight end until Tucker Kraft tore his ACL in Week 9 against the Panthers, which prompted the Packers to sign Whyle to the active roster in early November to serve as the team's TE2 behind Luke Musgrave. Whyle didn't see more than one target in any of his eight regular-season appearances, serving mostly as a blocker on offense. He will have the ability to test the waters during the 2026 offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

All set for Week 17 Whyle (concussion) has no injury designation for Saturday's contest against the Ravens, Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official website reports.
Impact Whyle will make his return to action after missing one contest while recovering from a concussion. The 26-year-old will be back in his timeshare at tight end with Luke Musgrave versus Baltimore.
DECEMBER 26, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Remains limited Wednesday Whyle (concussion) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday.
Impact Whyle was also deemed limited for Tuesday's practice walkthrough. The third-year tight end missed this past Saturday's overtime loss to Chicago due to the concussion he suffered Week 15 versus Denver, but he seems to have a chance of returning for Saturday's game against Baltimore, though he'll first need to clear concussion protocol. If Whyle manages to suit up, he'll likely back up starter Luke Musgrave, as fellow tight end John FitzPatrick tore his Achilles in Week 16 and is done for the season.
DECEMBER 25, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Limited in Tuesday's practice Whyle (concussion) will be a limited participant in Tuesday's practice, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.
Impact Whyle missed the Packers' Week 16 overtime loss to the Bears due to the concussion he sustained in the Week 15 loss to the Broncos. The tight end's potential return for Week 17 comes at a perfect time, as Tucker Kraft (ACL) and John FitzPatrick (Achilles) both have suffered season ending injuries, leaving Luke Musgrave as the sole tight end healthy tight end on the 53-man roster. If Whyle can clear the league's concussion protocol in time for Saturday's game against the Ravens, he will likely have a spot as the tight end No. 2, set to contribute in both the pass game as a receiver and the run game as a blocker.

Ruled out with concussion Whyle (concussion) has been ruled out ahead of Saturday's game against the Bears, Wez Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports.
Impact Whyle was unable to practice this week after sustaining a concussion in the Week 15 loss to the Broncos. The No. 3 tight end was primarily a blocker for the Packers' offense, and a practice squad elevation, such as rookie tight end Drake Dabney, will likely fill his role for the upcoming divisional tilt.

Doesn't practice Tuesday Whyle (concussion) did not participate during the Packers' walkthrough practice Tuesday.
Impact Whyle suffered a concussion in the first quarter of Sunday's game at Denver, and now he's in jeopardy of missing Saturday's game at Chicago. He'll probably have to return to practice in some capacity Wednesday or Thursday to have any chance of playing in Week 16.

Won't return vs. Denver Whyle (concussion) has been ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Broncos.
Impact Whyle has entered the league's concussion protocol after being shaken up in the first quarter of Sunday's game. John FitzPatrick will be the lone backup tight end behind Luke Musgrave the rest of the way.
DECEMBER 14, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Possible concussion Whyle is being evaluated for a possible concussion and is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Broncos.
Impact Whyle was shaken up early in the first quarter when attempting to block Broncos safety Talanoa Hufanga. John FitzPatrick should see more offensive snaps for as long as Whyle is out of the game.
DECEMBER 14, 2025 • ROTOWIRE
Notches 21-yard catch in win Whyle reeled in his lone target for a 21-yard reception in Sunday's 28-21 win over the Bears.
Impact Whyle took the field for 22 of Green Bay's 53 snaps on offense, with his 42 percent share placing him behind John FitzPatrick (57 percent) and Luke Musgrave (40 percent) as the Packers continue to take a committee approach at tight end following Tucker Kraft's season-ending knee injury. Since being signed to the 53-man roster in early November, Whyle has produced a 3-24-1 receiving line on four targets over five games.

Finds end zone in win Whyle was targeted once and caught one pass for two yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 27-20 victory over the Giants.
Impact Whyle appeared in only his second game as a Packer, and he played roughly four times as many snaps as he did in his Week 10 debut and also found the end zone for the first time. Whyle had several semi-productive appearances with the Titans last season, and the Packers appear to be evaluating their options at the tight end position with Tucker Kraft (knee) out for the season, so Whyle is now at least back on the fringes of the fantasy radar.
