Can Jim Harbaugh save the Chargers from their miserable playoff history?

The Chargers have the worst playoff record of all 14 teams in the postseason. Can Jim Harbaugh change that in his first year at the helm?

Can Jim Harbaugh save the Chargers from their miserable playoff history?
Still not practicing Palmer (foot) wasn't spotted at practice Wednesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact Palmer was listed as a non-participant Tuesday as well, so what, if anything, the wideout is able to do Thursday will provide key context rewarding his chances of playing in Saturday's playoff opener against the Texans. If Palmer -- who was inactive in Week 18 -- remains out this weekend, DJ Chark and Derius Davis would be in line to see added snaps alongside fellow WRs Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston.

Set to miss practice Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Palmer (foot) isn't in line to practice Tuesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact After exiting the Chargers' Week 17 win over the Patriots with the foot injury, Palmer didn't practice in any fashion last week before sitting out the Chargers' 34-20 win over the Raiders in the regular-season finale. He's yet to take any tangible steps forward in his recovery from the injury as the Chargers begin prepping for Saturday's wild-card game in Houston, but Palmer will still have two more opportunities to get in some on-field work before the team decides whether he'll take a designation into the weekend. In Palmer's absence in Week 18, DJ Chark stepped in as the Chargers' No. 3 wideout and finished with a six-yard touchdown reception across three targets.

Chargers' defense looks to finish turnaround season by allowing the fewest points in the NFL

Jesse Minter’s turnaround of the Los Angeles Chargers’ defense has the unit on the verge of something the franchise hasn’t done in 61 seasons — allowing the fewest points in the le...

Ruled out for Sunday Palmer (foot) has been ruled out for Sunday's regular season finale against the Raiders.
Impact Palmer didn't practice this week and will target a potential return to action in next weekend's playoff opener against an opponent to be determined. In his absence Sunday, DJ Chark and Derius Davis are candidates to log added snaps behind top wideout options Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston.

Sidelined for practice again Palmer (foot) was a non-participant in Thursday's practice.
Impact Palmer has been a spectator for both of the Chargers' first two Week 18 practices, so he'll likely need to take part in Friday's session in some fashion in order to avoid a designation for Sunday's regular-season finale in Las Vegas. If Palmer is sidelined for Week 18, DJ Chark and Derius Davis could both be in store for expanded roles at receiver.

Not practicing Palmer (heel) didn't practice Wednesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact Palmer left Saturday's win over New England in the third quarter and was spotted in a walking boot after the game. It's not yet clear how aggressive the Chargers will or won't be this Sunday against the Raiders; they know they'll be either the fifth or sixth seed in the AFC, with hope for moving up to No. 5 depending on Pittsburgh losing to Cincinnati on Sunday. It's unclear, in any case, if Palmer will be healthy enough to play.

Jim Harbaugh and Chargers focused on accomplishing more after wrapping up playoff berth

Jim Harbaugh, Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers are heading to the playoffs and focusing on what's next

Needs walking boot Palmer (heel) was donning a walking boot in the locker room following Saturday's 40-7 win at New England, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
Impact The Chargers may just be exercising caution with Palmer after he was forced out of Week 17 action late in the third quarter. He finished Saturday's game with four catches (on six targets) for 41 yards, which marked the third time in the last four contests that he surpassed 40 yards.

Chargers clinch playoff spot in Jim Harbaugh's 1st season with 40-7 rout of Patriots
Picks up heel injury Palmer exited Saturday's game at New England due to a heel injury.
Impact At the time he was deemed questionable to return in the third quarter Saturday, Palmer had hauled in four of six targets for 41 yards. As long as Palmer is sidelined, DJ Chark and Derius Davis will be the tertiary options at wide receiver for the Chargers behind Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston.

Scores on conversion pass in win Palmer secured three of six targets for 41 yards and caught a two-point conversion pass in the Chargers' 34-27 win over the Broncos on Thursday night.
Impact The veteran wideout was second to Ladd McConkey in both receptions and receiving yards while tying for the team lead in targets. Palmer's two-point conversion grab was also important, as it gave the Chargers a three-point lead early in the fourth quarter following a Derius Davis go-ahead 19-yard touchdown grab. Palmer remains a clear complementary option in Los Angeles' passing attack that's yet to surpass 78 receiving yards in any game, but he could see some additional opportunities in a Week 17 road clash against the Patriots on Saturday, Dec. 28 if New England's standout cornerback Christian Gonzalez spends the majority of his time on McConkey.

Minimal production in loss Palmer caught two of three targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 40-17 loss to the Buccaneers.
Impact After serving as the Chargers' top target in Week 14, Palmer reverted back to his smaller role with the return of rookie receiver Ladd McConkey to the lineup. The veteran played 75 percent of the Chargers' offensive snaps, but he was unable to produce much with his few opportunities. Despite a solid share in playing time, Palmer is unlikely to be a trustworthy option for fantasy purposes in the fantasy playoffs. Los Angeles will host the Broncos in Week 16.

Chargers have improved under Jim Harbaugh but are still struggling in close games

Jim Harbaugh has brought toughness to the Los Angeles Chargers
DECEMBER 10, 2024 • ASSOCIATED PRESS
Emerges as top target Palmer caught six of his nine targets for 78 yards in the 19-17 loss to the Chiefs on Sunday.
Impact With Ladd McConkey (knee/shoulder) out, Palmer took over as the team's top option, although quarterback Justin Herbert did spread the ball around to eight separate targets in the contest. Palmer had been held to just 11 receptions for 243 yards in the last six games combined, so the evidence seems pretty clear the fourth-year wideout's significant bump ties directly to McConkey's status. That will be something to monitor next week given the Chargers take on the porous Cincinnati defense in what could be an offensive explosion.
DECEMBER 9, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
One catch against Atlanta Palmer caught his lone target for 11 yards in Sunday's 17-13 win over the Falcons.
Impact Palmer had a quiet day against the Falcons, as his 11 receiving yards accounted for his lowest total in a contest this season. The veteran wideout played 63 percent of the Chargers offensive snaps Sunday, his lowest snap since Week 10. Through 11 games, Palmer has recorded just 24 catches for 414 yards and one touchdown in what has been an underwhelming 2024 campaign for the fourth-year receiver. The 25-year-old will be remain difficult to trust for fantasy purposes as the Chargers head into a Week 14 matchup against the Raiders.
DECEMBER 4, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Struggles with eight targets Palmer finished with three receptions (eight targets) for 38 yards in Monday's 30-23 loss to Baltimore.
Impact Palmer led the Chargers in targets, but the wideout finished just third in receptions and yardage Monday. It was actually the 24-year-old's best output since Week 9, highlighting the underwhelming nature of his performance in 2024. Palmer should only be considered a deep-league option in Week 13 in a road matchup against Atlanta.
NOVEMBER 26, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Hardly involved in passing game Palmer caught two of his four targets for 23 yards in the 34-27 win over the Bengals on Sunday.
Impact It appears as if both Ladd McConkey (6-9-123) and Quentin Johnston (six touchdowns this season) have surpassed Palmer, who was once presumed to be the team's defacto No. 1 to begin the year. The 2021 third-round pick has yet to surpass more than five targets in a game, but he's at least seen four or more targets in all but three contests this season. That low volume could change next week as the Chargers try to keep pace with the Ravens.
NOVEMBER 19, 2024 • ROTOWIRE
Only one catch Palmer tallied 36 yards on his one reception (two targets) in the 27-17 win over the Titans on Sunday.
Impact The Chargers once again finished with more rushing attempts (39) than pass attempts (18) limiting any sort of volume Palmer might have been able to compile. It's a feast or famine fantasy system in Los Angeles dependent on wide receivers scoring touchdowns. It's possible there will be more passing volume against the porous Bengals defense next week.
