Likely to act as top tight end
Bates is expected to serve as Washington's starting tight end Sunday against the Panthers with Ricky Seal-Jones (hip) ruled out for the contest and Logan Thomas (hamstring) still o...
Impact
After Seal-Jones exited early in last week's upset win over the Buccaneers, Bates stepped in to play a career-high 63 percent of the Football Team's offensive snaps. Though he didn't fill a high-volume role in the passing game, the rookie made good on his limited opportunities, reeling in all three of his targets for 25 yards. Bates profiles as a low-end starter at tight end for deep-league lineups in Week 11.

Fills in for Seals-Jones
Bates caught each of his three targets for 25 yards in Sunday's 29-19 win over Tampa Bay, playing a career-high 47 snaps with teammate Ricky Seals-Jones suffering a hip injury.
Impact
A rookie fourth-round pick, Bates has now climbed from third to first on the depth chart with Seals-Jones joining starter Logan Thomas (IR/hamstring) on the injured list. However, it isn't clear if Seals-Jones' hip injury is serious, nor is it for certain that Thomas will miss additional time beyond Week 10. Bates was timed at 4.84 in the 40-yard dash and never reached even 300 yards in a season at Boise State, suggesting his receiving contributions won't match Seals-Jones' recent performance even if the rookie temporarily handles a three-down role for Week 11 at Carolina.

Records first NFL catch
Bates caught his only target for a seven-yard gain in Sunday's 31-13 loss to Kansas City, registering his first regular-season NFL reception.
Impact
The rookie fourth-round pick has seen just one target in two games since starting tight end Logan Thomas (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve. Ricky Seals-Jones has replaced Thomas in a three-down role, while Bates remains limited to blocking for the most part. He doesn't figure to see more than a target or two Week 7 at Green Bay.

Stepping into No. 2 role
Bates will operate as Washington's No. 2 tight end behind Ricky Seals-Jones while Logan Thomas (hamstring) is on injured reserve, Pete Hailey of NBC Sports Washington reports.
Impact
Bates played only four offensive snaps across the first three games of the season, but he logged 14 plays from scrimmage during Sunday's win over the Falcons with Thomas going down with the injury. Bates, a rookie fourth-round pick, has yet to be targeted in the passing game and is unlikely to have much fantasy relevance.

First TE off board in Day 3
The Football Team selected Fitzpatrick in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 124th overall.
Impact
Bates was projected to be a late Day 3 selection, so it's a bit surprising to see Washington take him this high. A three-year starter at Boise State, the 23-year-old mainly lined up as an inline blocker, never catching more than 22 passes in a single season. At 6-foot-5, 250 pounds, Bates possesses the requisite height and weight to be a player at the NFL level, but he'll probably see significant playing time along special teams to start.
