Deshaun Watson returned to practice with the Houston Texans after not taking part in workouts for almost a week

Throwing picks with regularity Mills has turned the ball over on most days during sessions and looks slow to process the more competitive periods of practice, according to Aaron Reiss of The Athletic.

Impact Mills began Thursday's session with a sack to begin a drive, then ended it with interception. It should not shock followers that a mid-round quarterback is making ugly plays in camp, but the important thing is if Mills can learn from his mistakes. "As elementary as it sounds, (the key is) not making the same mistake twice," offensive coordinator Tim Kelly said of coaching rookie quarterbacks. "For us as coaches, when we can get that from our players, it shows that they're coachable." The Texans are not expecting Mills to be a starter anytime soon -- that's the job of Tyrod Taylor -- but they will want to evaluate him at some point during the regular season. The organization needs to determine if he's the quarterback of the future, or if they need to expend a first-round pick next season on that player.

Bounces back Mills looked better in one-on-one and team drills Monday than he did Saturday, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact Mills threw several interceptions when he stepped in with the first-team offense for red-zone drills Saturday, but he was reportedly more accurate Monday. "I thought he bounced back really well," Texans head coach David Culley said. "We expected that. What that tells me about him is he's not going to get rattled." Mills has been getting increased reps with Tyrod Taylor (personal) away from the team.

Works out with first team Mills spent time with the first-team offense Saturday, as Tyrod Taylor (personal) was not at practice, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Impact It was a red-zone day for the Texans, and Mills started well, throwing touchdown strikes to Jordan Akins and Chris Conley. Later, however, he was picked off twice by safety Justin Reid. Overall, the rookie threw five interceptions, per Aaron Reiss of The Athletic. Houston head coach David Culley took a big-picture view, noting it was a good learning experience for Mills, the 2021 third-round draft pick that is expected to back up Taylor and possibly Jeff Driskel.

First pick for Houston in 2021 The Texans selected Mills in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, 67th overall.

Impact The Texans use their first pick of this year's draft to take a quarterback in light of the unknowns surrounding franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson. Mills was billed as one of the best "project" quarterbacks in this class in that he didn't have the resume worthy of a first-round pick, but his tools could allow him to develop into a starter down the road. He was a blue-chip recruit out of high school, but knee injuries dating back to that period kept him off the field until 2018. Mills took over as Stanford's starter in 2019 and threw for 1,960 yards, 11 touchdowns and five picks in six starts. He is talented and scouts believe in his ability, but the 11 career starts and the knee injury history are concerns.
