Raiders place rookie CB Damon Arnette on COVID list
The Las Vegas Raiders have placed rookie cornerback Damon Arnette on the reserve/COVID-19 list
OCTOBER 19, 2020
•
Associated Press
Shifts to COVID list
Arnette (thumb) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Impact
Arnette was already on injured reserve following an October thumb surgery. The rookie cornerback either tested positive for the virus or came into close contact with an infected person, and he won't be able to return to team activities until he clears the NFL's COVID-19 protocols.

Shifts to IR
The Raiders placed Arnette (thumb) on injured reserve Friday.
Impact
Arnette will be eligible to return to the lineup in Week 7 against the Buccaneers, but he's expected to need 6-to-8 weeks following thumb surgery. The rookie first-rounder was an immediate starter for the Raiders and compiled 13 tackles and a pass breakup through three games, but for the time being, Amik Robertson and Keisean Nixon will likely both see an uptick in usage behind starters Trayvon Mullen and Lamarcus Joyner.

Set to go on IR
Coach Jon Gruden said Arnette (thumb) will need to be placed on IR, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN NFL Nation reports.
Impact
While Arnette hasn't officially been placed on IR yet, this news comes as no surprise given his expected recovery time of 6-to-8 weeks. When he goes on IR, Arnette will need to miss a minimum of three weeks, so the earliest we could see the rookie first-rounder again will be Week 7 against Tampa Bay.

ROTOWIRE
Likely out 6-to-8 weeks
Arnette has undergone thumb surgery and is expected to miss 6-to-8 weeks, NBC Sports California reports.
Impact
Arnette aggravated a thumb fracture during Week 3's loss to the Patriots, and it now looks as though he'll need to sit out until mid-November while recovering. As such, the Raiders stand to place the rookie No. 19 overall pick on IR. Lamarcus Joyner, Amik Robertson and Nevin Lawson (ankle) are candidates to handle increased snaps while Arnette is sidelined.

Unable to practice Wednesday
Arnette (thumb) did not participate in Wednesday's practice, Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Arnette has played through a fractured left thumb since training camp, but he aggravated the injury during Sunday's loss to the Patriots, according to NBC Sports Bay Area. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the rookie first-round pick could be in danger of missing up to six weeks due to his injury, though the Raiders have yet to offer an official recovery timetable.

Leaves game Sunday
Arnette (thumb) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Impact
It's unclear how the 2020 first-round pick suffered the injury, but it's serious enough to force him to miss game time. As long as Arnette is sidelined, look for Lamarcus Joyner and Keisean Nixon to see increased snaps.

Seven tackles in Week 2
Arnette racked up seven solo tackles in Sunday's 34-24 victory over the Saints.
Impact
Arnette and the rest of Las Vegas' defensive backs did an admirable job against Drew Brees and the Saints passing game, holding them in check for most of the game. Another tough matchup is on tap for the Raiders in Week 3 as they travel to New England to take on Cam Newton and the Patriots.

Notches five tackles in NFL debut
Arnette recorded five tackles (three solo) and one pass defensed in Sunday's 34-30 win over the Panthers.
Impact
Rebounding from a broken thumb suffered late in training camp, Arnette earned the start at cornerback in his NFL debut across from Trayvon Mullen. Arnette got burned on what turned into a 75-yard touchdown catch for Panthers receiver Robby Anderson, but the former otherwise appeared competent enough to retain the starting role heading into a Week 2 contest against the Saints.

Managing broken thumb
Arnette was seen with a soft cast during Wednesday's practice after he suffered a fracture in his thumb, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Impact
The 2020 first-round pick is no stranger to playing through injury, as he played through the entire 2019 collegiate season for Ohio State with a broken right wrist. Arnette was seen in high spirits during practice Wednesday, and appears ready to play through the injury, per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. It's still too early to tell if the injury will force him to miss Week 1 of the regular season.
