Saints Re-Sign Clyde Edwards-Helaire to Bolster Running Back Depth The veteran will have a chance to make the team in 2025.

Staying in New Orleans Edwards-Helaire signed a reserve/future contract with the Saints on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Impact Edwards-Helaire started the 2024 season on the Chiefs' reserve/non-football illness list. He was activated from the NFI list Oct. 15 but was a healthy scratch for the next nine games and was ultimately waived by Kansas City in mid-December. He signed with the Saints' practice squad two days later and was elevated for the final two games of the regular season, during which he logged 13 carries for 46 yards while adding three catches (on five targets) for 24 yards. By signing a future contract, Edwards-Helaire will be on the Saints' 90-man roster for the start of the new league year March 12. He'll be able to participate in OTAs, minicamp and training camp and will look to earn a spot on New Orleans' 53-man roster for the 2025 season.

Goes back to practice squad The Saints reverted Edwards-Helaire to their practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.

Impact Edwards-Helaire was elevated for Sunday's Week 18 game against Tampa Bay and led New Orleans running backs with 26 yards on eight carries while adding one reception for 14 yards. With both Alvin Kamara (groin) and Kendre Miller (concussion) out of action, Edwards-Helaire finished third in offensive snaps (18) among the Saints' tailbacks, though he didn't trail Jamaal Williams (24) or Jordan Mims (24) by much. After joining New Orleans on a practice-squad deal in mid-December, Edwards-Helaire played in two contests, totaling 46 yards on 13 rushes and 24 yards on three receptions.

Paces ground attack in loss Edwards-Helaire rushed eight times for 26 yards and brought in his only target for 14 yards in the Saints' 27-19 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday.

Impact Edwards-Helaire served as the de facto No. 1 back as expected with both Alvin Kamara (groin) and Kendre Miller (concussion) sidelined, and he produced a team-high rushing yardage total. The veteran back will be an unrestricted free agent come the new league year, and Edwards-Helaire shouldn't have too much trouble garnering some interest on the open market given his status as a one-time first-round pick and the fact he's just 25 years old.

Up from practice squad The Saints elevated Edwards-Helaire from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday in advance of Sunday's game in Tampa Bay.

Impact With Kendre Miller (concussion) out and Alvin Kamara (groin) doubtful for Week 18 action, Edwards-Helaire will be among the RB options for the Saints on Sunday along with Jamaal Williams and Jordan Mims. In Week 17 against the Raiders, Kamara also was sidelined, Miller sustained his head injury, and Mims was a healthy scratch, which left Edwards-Helaire (26 of 60 snaps) and Williams (25 of 60) to split work. Having said that, Edwards turned his seven touches into 30 yards from scrimmage, while Williams managed 24 total yards on three touches.

Impact Edwards-Helaire will officially be elevated from the practice squad prior to Sunday's regular-season finale. He led all Saints running backs with five rushing attempts in the Week 17 loss to the Raiders, and Edwards-Helaire could work ahead of Jamaal Williams and Jordan Mims in a backfield that will definitely be without Kendre Miller (concussion) and is unlikely to feature Alvin Kamara (groin), who is listed as doubtful.

Miller's exit in the second quarter due to a concussion allowed Edwards-Helaire to earn the most snaps (26) and touches (seven for 30 yards from scrimmage) in the position group, while Jamaal Williams played 25 snaps and handled three touches (for 24 total yards), and Miller was contained to eight plays and four touches (for 19 total yards). It's unknown if Kamara or Miller will gain clearance to suit up Week 18 at Tampa Bay, so Edwards-Helaire and Williams may be lined up to split the backfield reps in that contest.
