Hubbard was 'excellent.' With McCaffrey to join him, could Panthers get their mojo back?
The Carolina Panthers need Chuba Hubbard and Christian McCaffrey. Perhaps the running backs need each other, too.

Over 130 yards from scrimmage
Hubbard rushed 24 times for 101 yards and caught five of six targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 21-18 loss to the Eagles
Impact
Hubbard played very well in his second NFL start in place of the injured Christian McCaffrey (hamstring). The rookie fourth-rounder began with a 26-yard rush in the first quarter and kept his momentum going with a number of nice gains afterward, tying for the team lead in receptions as well. Overall, his play earned him nearly 30 touches on the day, mimicking McCaffrey's usual workload while backup Royce Freeman was restricted to just four touches. While it was great to see Hubbard take advantage of his opportunity Sunday, the seemingly likely return of McCaffrey in Week 6 versus the Vikings could suddenly return Hubbard to second-string duty. Given his production, though, Hubbard's presence could potentially help Carolina manage McCaffrey's exposure upon his return, making the team's backfield situation worth monitoring further going forward.

Draws Week 5 start

Impact
The starting assignment was fully expected for Hubbard after McCaffrey took a doubtful designation into the weekend following limited practices Wednesday through Friday. While McCaffrey was sidelined for the Week 4 loss to Dallas, Hubbard paced the backfield with 13 carries for 57 yards, but he was limited to two catches for 14 yards on two targets in the passing game, as Carolina leaned on Rodney Smith as its primary third-down back. As such, a true three-down role may not await Hubbard on Sunday, but he still looks like a strong fantasy option as the lead runner for a Carolina squad that will be facing the NFL's 31st-ranked run defense.

Likely getting another start Week 5

Impact
Though McCaffrey and head coach Matt Rhule consistently expressed optimism throughout the week about the former's recovery from the hamstring injury, McCaffrey looks set to miss his second straight game after he managed only limited participation in practices Wednesday through Friday. Unless McCaffrey exhibits remarkable progress heading into Sunday, he'll yield starting duties to Hubbard, who played 47 percent of the offensive snaps in the Panthers' Week 4 loss to the Cowboys and finished with 71 yards on 15 touches (13 carries, two catches). A negative game script for most of that contest resulted in Hubbard losing some passing-down work to Rodney Smith, but the rookie could be in better position to deliver a more useful fantasy line Week 5. Not only are the Panthers home favorites in the contest, but Hubbard will also be facing off against the NFL's 31st-ranked run defense.

FANTASY PLAYS: Players to start and sit for NFL Week 5
The Carolina Panthers’ defense started the season hot, but were a little less scary last week against Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys

Manages 71 total yards
Hubbard recorded 13 rushes for 57 yards in Sunday's Week 4 loss to the Cowboys. He added two receptions for 14 yards.
Impact
Hubbard led the Panthers' backfield, accounting for 13 of the team's 24 rushing attempts. He was particularly effective early in the contest, as he managed gains of 14 and 12 yards on the team's third offensive possession. Despite the hot start, he was scripted out of the chance to produce as the Panthers' fell behind by three touchdowns by late in the third quarter. It's unclear how long Christian McCaffrey (hamstring) will remain sidelined, but assuming he can't return in Week 5 against the Eagles, Hubbard should again have the chance to lead the Panthers backfield.

Confirmed as Week 4 starter
Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said Wednesday that Hubbard will serve as the team's starting running back Sunday in Dallas, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Though top back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss some time after injuring his hamstring in the Sept. 23 win over the Texans, the Panthers are apparently optimistic that he'll be sidelined for less than three games, as Rhule said McCaffrey won't be placed on injured reserve. In any case, Hubbard should be in store for an expanded opportunity for at least the next two contests, starting with Sunday's showdown in Dallas. Though Royce Freeman is on hand as an experienced backup option behind Hubbard, the rookie out of Oklahoma State has exhibited a three-down skill set over his 64 offensive snaps through Carolina's first three games. In addition to carrying 19 times for 62 yards, Hubbard has run routes on 34 of the 38 pass plays in which he's been on the field, recording eight receptions for 31 yards on eight targets. He's also won in both of his pass-blocking opportunities, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
