Bucs injury report: Updates on Mike Evans, Carlton Davis for Week 6

Trending in right direction
Davis (abdomen) was a limited participant during Thursday's practice.
Impact
This is certainly positive news, as Davis was unable to suit up in any capacity Wednesday. The team could be looking to manage Davis' reps in practice, so it's still to early to rule the Auburn product out for Week 6. If he does miss Sunday's game against Green Bay, however, Jamel Dean or Ryan Smith would be the primary candidates to replace Davis in the starting lineup at cornerback.

Misses practice Wednesday
Davis (abdomen) was a non-participant for Wednesday's practice.
Impact
Davis swarmed the field during last Thursday's win over Chicago, suiting up in 100 percent of defensive snaps, and he racked up seven solo tackles, two pass break ups and an interception. It's unclear how the Auburn product suffered the injury, but, it's a negative sign that he didn't see any practice time after the extra rest time from Week 5. If Davis is to miss time with the injury, Jamel Dean or Ryan Smith would be in line for the start at corner back opposite Sean Murphy-Bunting.

Co-team-high tackle tally
Davis recorded seven tackles (all solo), an interception and another pass breakup in the Buccaneers' 20-19 loss to the Bears on Thursday night.
Impact
It was a busy night for the third-year cornerback, who's been one of the Buccaneers' most consistent defensive players through the first five games. The tackle total qualified as a season-high figure for Davis, while his interception displayed both his athleticism and alertness, as it came off a tipped ball that initially hit the receiver's hands. The Auburn product has a career-high three picks already, and given the frequency with which he's been getting his hand on the ball (six pass breakups overall), he appears destined for a few more during the balance of the campaign.

Nabs key interception in win
Davis recorded two tackles (one solo), one interception and one additional defensed pass in the Buccaneers' 38-31 win over the Chargers on Sunday.
Impact
Over his first two seasons, Davis managed to officially break up 23 passes and yet come away with just one interception for his troubles, but the odds were bound to shift in his favor if he continued to disrupt at the same level. That may now be coming to pass, as Davis has a pair of picks in the last three games following his crucial interception of Justin Herbert at the Buccaneers' 48-yard line with 2:35 remaining Sunday. Tampa Bay was clinging to a 38-31 lead at the time, and the change of possession eventually forced Los Angeles to exhaust its remaining timeouts and the Bucs to go into kneel-down mode. Through four contests, Davis boasts a fantasy-friendly cornerback line of 13 tackles (10 solo), two interceptions and four total pass breakups while surrendering just 4.0 yards per attempt and a 46.7 percent completion rate in primary coverage.

Nabs second career pick
Davis recorded five tackles (two solo), including one tackle for loss, an interception and another defensed pass in the Buccaneers' 31-17 win over the Panthers on Sunday.
Impact
Davis has excelled in frequently getting his hands on the ball over his short career, but interceptions have still been at a premium for the Auburn product. Perhaps 2020 will be the season the odds turn in his favor, with Sunday's key third-quarter pick of Teddy Bridgewater that came with the Bucs nursing a seven-point lead potentially jumpstarting matters. The turnover led to a Ryan Succop field goal that gave Tampa Bay some key breathing room and afforded Davis' fantasy managers a bonus on what was a relatively solid day for the third-year corner. With 19 defensed passes a year ago, Davis will look to continue exploiting his knack for getting his hands on the ball in a Week 3 road matchup against the Broncos.

Sheds shoulder injury
Davis (shoulder) is not listed on Wednesday's injury report, Carmen Vitali of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
Impact
Davis sustained a shoulder injury during a late training camp scrimmage, but he's ready to begin the season at full strength. The 23-year-old will reprise his usual role against the Saints on Sunday, when he'll face the difficult task of containing a lethal Drew Brees-led aerial attack.

Not practicing Sunday
Davis (shoulder) didn't participate in Sunday's practice, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.
Impact
Davis suffered an injury during Friday's scrimmage, but head coach Bruce Arians didn't think it was too serious at the time. It's worth keeping an eye on, though, as Davis is instrumental to the Buccaneers' defense. Last season, he posted 60 tackles, 19 pass breakups and one interception over 14 games, and Arians has recently said he's a top-10 cornerback in the league.

Receives high praise from coach
Coach Bruce Arians labeled Davis as an elite cornerback in Tuesday's camp-opening Zoom call with reporters, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports. "I think Carlton made that move last...
Impact
The impressive manner in which Davis wrapped up his second season clearly made an impression on Arians, and while the Buccaneers head man may also be trying to boost his young cornerback's confidence, the remarks may prove prescient once the season begins. Davis finished 2019 with 19 pass breakups and allowed a 43.6 percent completion rate on pass plays when he was in primary coverage. The Auburn product also proved to be sure tackler while compiling 60 stops, and he helped limit Jones to a solid-but-not-spectacular 12-146-0 line across two games. The press coverage defensive coordinator Todd Bowles asked his defensive backs to play was a good fit for Davis' skills since he'd thrived with it during his college days, and with a year of experience in the scheme now under his belt, there's certainly a chance he begins to convert more of the passes he gets his hands on into interceptions.
