Impact Edwards has been practicing in a non-contact jersey and didn't travel to Detroit for Friday's exhibition. He's right in the mix for a starting wideout job, and his ability to continue practicing in some capacity suggests he's dealing with a sprain or bad bruise rather than a severe injury.

On track for starting job Edwards (shoulder) wore a non-contact jersey again Tuesday, but he nonetheless appears to be one of the team's top three wide receivers, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.

Impact Scott Bair of the Falcons' website had a similar take, saying "Edwards seems like the frontline guy" even though he's listed as a second-stringer (behind Olamide Zaccheaus) on the team's initial preseason depth chart. It's not really a depth chart to be taken seriously, as it lists rookie first-round pick Drake London with the fifth unit, among other oddities. ESPN's Rothstein suggests London, Edwards and Zaccheaus are the likely top three at wide receiver, though KhaDarel Hodge also has been getting snaps with the starters and making plays throughout camp. Edwards doesn't seem likely to play in Friday's preseason game against Detroit, given that he's still managing the shoulder injury he suffered during the first week of camp. He returned to practice less than a week later, albeit with a non-contact jersey that he continues to sport during contact work.

Returns to practice Edwards (shoulder) returned to practice Tuesday wearing a yellow jersey, D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Impact The jersey presumably signifies that he can't be hit or is otherwise limited in some capacity. Edwards hurt his shoulder Saturday and missed practice Monday, but it seems he's avoided a serious injury and continue making his case for a starting job.

Avoids serious injury Coach Arthur Smith said Monday that Edwards (shoulder) is considered "day-to-day," Scott Bair of the Falcons' official site reports.

Impact Smith said Edwards' injury is "nothing that's considered long term." The 2020 third-round pick suffered a shoulder issue after falling awkwardly during Saturday's practice. Other wideouts on Atlanta's depth chart, including Olamide Zaccheaus and Auden Tate, will stand to benefit from increased opportunities as long as Edwards remains sidelined.

Impact Head coach Arthur Smith downplayed the injury following practice, but the fact Edwards is expected to undergo additional testing is at least worth monitoring. The former Raiders wide receiver has been working with the starting unit opposite Drake London as the team's No. 2 wideout to begin training camp.
