Packers visit Detroit in matchup of slumping NFC North teams

The Green Bay Packers are trying to snap a four-game losing streak and the Detroit Lions are attempting to break out of a five-game skid as they match up
NOVEMBER 3, 2022 • Associated Press
Making progress Wright (concussion protocol) was limited at Thursday's practice.
Impact Wright entered the protocol for head injuries in the wake of a Week 8 loss to the Dolphins, but after sitting out Wednesday he made his first notable progress with some on-field activity one day later. Still, he must complete all five phases of the protocol to gain clearance to play, so continuing to work Friday (or even getting back to a full practice) would put him in a fair spot ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers. With T.J. Hockenson getting traded to the Vikings earlier this week, Wright, when active, likely will serve as the Lions' No. 1 tight end for the rest of the season.
NOVEMBER 3, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
No practice Wednesday Wright (concussion protocol) was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice.
Impact Wright exited this past Sunday's loss to the Dolphins late in the contest to be evaluated for a concussion, and the first practice report of Week 9 revealed that he's indeed in the NFL's protocol for head injuries. It's unclear if he actually has a concussion, but he nonetheless must clear the five steps necessary to be cleared for game action. Whether or not that happens before Sunday's contest against the Packers remains to be seen, but with T.J. Hockenson shipped off to Minnesota on Tuesday, Wright stands to benefit in terms of snaps and targets once he's available. In seven games this season, Wright has hauled in all six targets for 88 yards.

Larger role likely awaits Wright (head) is expected to take on a more prominent role for the Lions over the rest of the season after Detroit traded top tight end T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota on Tuesday, Just...
Impact With Hockenson's departure, the Lions are left with Wright and James Mitchell as their sole options at tight end currently on the 53-man roster, though at least one of Garrett Griffin and Shane Zylstra are expected to be elevated from the practice squad to add depth to the position group ahead of Sunday's game against the Packers. Before he can take claim to Hockenson's vacated snaps, Wright must first clear the concussion protocol after he exited early in the Lions' Week 8 loss to the Dolphins to be evaluated for a head injury. Over his 17 career games, Wright has tallied 18 receptions for 205 yards and two touchdowns on 23 targets.

Tagovailoa aids Dolphins' turnaround in 31-27 win over Lions

Will not return Wight is being evaluated for a concussion and will not return Sunday against the Dolphins.
Impact Wright recorded one catch for six yards before having to exit the game. It's bad news for the 23-year-old, who is coming off a career-best effort last Sunday against the Cowboys. Rookie tight end James Mitchell will now potentially see extra opportunity behind T.J. Hockenson for the remainder of the game.

Prescott knows it's defense 1st for Cowboys despite return

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott faces the challenge of remembering the defense is carrying his team
OCTOBER 24, 2022 • Associated Press
Relatively big day as pass catcher Wright caught four of four targets for 57 yards during Sunday's 24-6 loss to the Cowboys.
Impact Wright had only caught one pass this year before setting new career highs in receptions and receiving yardage in this one -- even outpacing top tight end T.J. Hockenson in receiving yardage along the way. While it's unlikely that this is the sudden start of a heightened receiving role for the blocking specialist, Wright could be needed to catch a few passes over the next couple of weeks as the Lions' receiving corps returns to full health.

Campbell's road woes persist as Lions fall to Cowboys 24-6

Dan Campbell is still looking for his first road win in two seasons as coach of the Detroit Lions
OCTOBER 23, 2022 • Associated Press
No targets again Wright logged 28 offensive snaps during Sunday's 29-0 loss to the Patriots.
Impact Wright caught his fist pass of the season in Week 2, but he hasn't seen any work in the passing game since then. Expect the blocking specialist to continue in his usual ways when Detroit gets back from a Week 6 bye.
OCTOBER 10, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
On track for roster spot Wright appears to have secured a roster spot, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Impact Head coach Dan Campbell is on record this summer that the Lions are aiming to keep three tight ends on the active roster this season, including a blocker to complement the receiving-proficient T.J. Hockenson. It appears Wright will be that guy in the blocking role. While this may earn him a decent amount of offensive snaps in 2022, Wright will remain a long shot for fantasy utility given the minimal receiving role he is expected to have while competing for targets underneath with the likes of Hockenson, D'Andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown.
AUGUST 19, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Stays with Lions Wright signed a one-year contract with the Lions on Monday, Howard Balzer of SI.com reports.
Impact Wright joined the Lions as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2021. The rookie appeared in 10 games for the Lions last season, all after Week 7, recording 12 catches on 17 targets for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Currently No. 2 on the Lions' positional depth chart at tight end, Wright will work to build on his rookie campaign this upcoming season.
APRIL 18, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Scores on trick play Wright caught two of two targets for 51 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's 37-30 win over Green Bay.
Impact Wright returned from a week off due to COVID protocols and again logged over 70 percent of the offensive snaps while serving as a top tight end in the absence of T.J. Hockenson (finger). While most of his production came on a flea flicker in the third quarter when the tight end sneaked behind the defense for a 36-yard touchdown, the Notre Dame product is continuing to show that he can be a little more than a blocker at the pro level. In total, he will finish the 2021 campaign with 12 catches for 117 yards and two touchdowns on 17 targets despite not seeing regular action until the second half of the year. Considering he will now be an exclusive-rights free agent at the end of the year, Wright is a strong candidate to return to Detroit in 2022 as a depth option behind Hockenson.

Rodgers fine, sits 2nd half, top seed Packers lose to Lions

Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes in the first half and sat out the second half with nothing at stake as the Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers 37-30
JANUARY 9, 2022 • Associated Press
Ready to go Sunday Wright (groin) is active for Sunday against the Packers.
Impact Wright was limited in practice all week, but he feels good enough to play in the Lions' season finale. Wright should fill in as the No. 1 tight end on the positional depth chart, a spot that hasn't yielded big results for Wright yet. The rookie has 10 catches on 15 targets for 66 yards and a touchdown in nine games. Numbers he'll look to expand on Sunday against the Packers.
JANUARY 9, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Uncertain for Sunday Wright (groin) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against Green Bay, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Impact Wright was a limited practice participant throughout the week, after missing last week's game on the reserve/COVID-19 list. His return to the lineup would leave fewer snaps for Jared Pinkney and Ross Travis, neither of whom was targeted in last week's loss to Seattle. The 23-year-old Wright did play 75 percent of snaps Week 15 and 73 percent Week 16, but with only three catches for four yards on four targets between the two games. A solid outing Week 18 could help him stick around on the depth chart behind T.J. Hockenson (IR/hand) next year.
JANUARY 7, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Limited again Thursday Wright (groin) remained limited at Thursday's practice.
Impact The tight end opened the week with a limited practice Wednesday and was at that level again Thursday. Wright still has Friday's practice to ramp up his activity ahead of the Lions' season finale versus the Packers on Sunday.
JANUARY 6, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Limited practice Wednesday Wright was a limited participant in practice Wednesday due to a groin injury.
Impact The tight end was activated off the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday after his positive test for the virus forced to miss the Lions' Week 17 loss to the Seahawks. Wright wasn't known to be dealing with an injury prior to landing on the list, but his ability to practice Wednesday in any capacity bodes well for his chances to play Sunday against the Packers.

Lions struggle toward finish line with what's left of roster

It has been a long season for the Detroit Lions, and there is still more adversity ahead
JANUARY 3, 2022 • Associated Press
Off COVID-19 list The Lions reinstated Wright (illness) from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday.
Impact Wright was unable to clear the NFL's COVID-19 return-to-play protocol in advance of Sunday's 51-29 loss to the Seahawks, resulting in him missing his first game since being promoted from the practice squad back in Week 7. Neither of the two tight ends Detroit had active Week 17 -- Jared Pinkney and Ross Travis -- drew a target in the loss, so Wright should be relatively unchallenged as he reclaims the starting job for this weekend's season finale versus Green Bay. Since settling into a larger role when T.J. Hockenson (thumb) was shut down for the season after Week 13, Wright has recorded six receptions for 24 yards on nine targets over three games.
JANUARY 3, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Not playing Week 17 Wright (illness) won't be available for Sunday's game in Seattle after the Lions didn't activate him from the reserve/COVID-19 list prior to Saturday's deadline for week 17 roster...
Impact Detroit will be without three of its top pass catchers in Wright and wideouts Josh Reynolds and Kalif Raymond, all of whom tested positive for the virus this week and weren't able to exit the NFL's COVID-19 return-to-play protocol. With both T.J. Hockenson (thumb) and Shane Zylstra (kneecap) done for the season, Wright was expected to dominate the snaps at tight end for Detroit's final two games before he landed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday. With Wright out this week, the Lions will likely turn to a combination of Jared Pinkney and Ross Travis to play snaps at the position.
JANUARY 2, 2022 • ROTOWIRE
Placed on reserve/COVID-19 list Wright (illness) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday.
Impact Wright tested positive for COVID-19 Tuesday and will now enter the NFL's protocols for the virus. The tight end operated as the Lions' top option at the position in Week 16 against the Falcons, catching three balls for four yards in the loss. With his status for Week 17 against the Seahawks in question, Jared Pinkney may step into a starting role.
DECEMBER 29, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Grabs three short passes Wright caught three of three targets for four yards during Sunday's 20-16 loss to Atlanta.
Impact Wright got back in the box score after going catchless last week in Arizona, but all of his looks were at or near the line of scrimmage. While the loss of Shane Zylstra (knee) could cement him as Detroit's clear-cut No. 1 tight end, the Notre Dame product doesn't seem to have the skill set or role to be a worthwhile fantasy contributor in Week 17 against Seattle.
DECEMBER 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
No catches against Arizona Wright was targeted once but did not catch a pass during Sunday's 30-12 win over the Cardinals.
Impact Wright trailed Shane Zylstra in offensive snaps last week against Denver, but this time Wright logged three quarters of the playing time while Zylstra was held under half of it. However, neither tight end found much success as a receiver despite Detroit finding immense offensive success. As such, neither of Wright or Zylstra is worth much fantasy consideration, especially with Jared Goff (COVID-19) uncertain to play Sunday against Atlanta.
DECEMBER 21, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Three catches without Hockenson Wright caught three of five passes for 20 yards during Sunday's loss to the Broncos.
Impact Wright seemed in store for a heightened load with T.J. Hockenson (hand) sidelined. While Wright was certainly more involved as a receiver, he did it while not topping 60 percent of the offensive snaps. Instead, Shane Zylstra led Detroit tight ends in snaps, though neither managed a useful stat line for fantasy purposes. Even if Hockenson remains sidelined in Week 15 against Arizona, neither Wright or Zylstra will be worthy of much fantasy consideration.
