Impact Walter was set to be an exclusive-rights free agent in March, but he's locked down security for the 2021 campaign. The 24-year-old suited up in four games with the Niners last year, rushing once for three yards and catching his lone target for 27 yards.

Removed from COVID list Walter was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Monday.

Impact Walter has been residing on the reserve list since Dec. 17, but he'll now have an opportunity to rejoin the 49ers' running back stable heading into a Week 17 matchup against Seattle. The 24-year-old has fulfilled most of his duties on special teams this season, fielding 33 of his 45 total snaps in that department over three game appearances.

Shifts to COVID-19 list The 49ers placed Walter on the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

Impact Walter was placed on the list due to either testing positive for the virus, or coming into close contact with someone who did. Walter could still have a chance to play in Sunday's game against the Cowboys, but he'll need to test negative at least twice, 24 hours apart to gain clearance.

Impact The 24-year-old has made three appearances since Week 9, but with Raheem Mostert, Tevin Coleman, Jeff Wilson and Jerick McKinnon all active for Monday night's game, he's been relegated from the active roster. Walter has collected 30 scrimmage yards over two offensive touches, adding three kick-return attempts for 64 yards this season.

Impact Walter was signed from the practice squad for the second week in a row, but he was able to actually get involved in the gameplan for the first time this season. The 24-year-old received the first touches of his pro career Sunday, so it's tough to tell what the 49ers have in the youngster. He did show soft hands during his time at Rice, so he could serve a third-down role even if either of Raheem Mostert (ankle) or Tevin Coleman (knee) are healed up after the upcoming bye week. Both of the backs ahead of him on the depth chart Sunday (Jerick McKinnon and JaMycal Hasty) also suffered injuries, so we could even see Walter starting against the Rams in Week 12 if the stable of injured backs are unable to return to action.

Impact Walter was elevated to the active roster ahead of last week's game against the Packers, and he appears in line for another appearance for Week 10. Both Raheem Mostert (ankle) and Tevin Coleman (knee) are not expected to play until at least Week 12, so that leaves Jerick McKinnon, JaMycal Hasty and likely Walter to man the running back corps for the next few weeks.

Unless one of Hasty or McKinnon suffers an in-game injury or the contest becomes uncompetitive, Walter likely won't be a part of the backfield rotation.
