Promoted to Chicago's roster Pierce was promoted from Chicago's practice squad to the 53-man roster Tuesday, Larry Mayer of the Bears' official site reports.

Impact Pierce will have a chance to mix in behind David Montgomery at the running back position with Tarik Cohen done for the season with a torn ACL. The only other running back on the team is special teams contributor Ryan Nall, though Cordarrelle Patterson also has some experience at the position.

Lands on practice squad Pierce cleared waivers Sunday and signed with the Bears' practice squad, Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Impact With David Montgomery (hamstring) uncertain for Week 1, Pierce lost the battle to Ryan Nall to round out the running-back room. If Montgomery is unable to play in the season opener, however, Pierce could be activated to serve as depth against the Lions.

Impact Pierce briefly appeared to be in the mix for a backfield gig while David Montgomery (groin) worked his way back to full health, but he'll now be subjected to waivers. Tarik Cohen, Ryan Nall and Cordarrelle Patterson remain Chicago's top running backs behind Montgomery.

Impact With Tarik Cohen being a receiving specialist, Cordarrelle Patterson preferring to run outside the tackles and Ryan Nall only seeing two carries last year, Pierce appears to be the most traditional running back among Montgomery's backups. Earlier in training camp, running backs coach Charles London stated that Pierce was very explosive and getting better each day. In terms of fantasy value, it will depend whether Montgomery misses time, and if that happens, Pierce could certainly be worthy of a flex spot while the latter is out of action.
