Impact Gonzalez had another strong showing to cap off a productive preseason. The 20-year-old finished his rookie campaign in 2025-26 by averaging 3.9 points and 3.3 rebounds over 14.6 minutes per contest in 74 regular-season appearances. With Jaylen Brown now in Philadelphia, others will have an opportunity to step up. While Gonzalez might not start, at least not consistently, he is a player to watch throughout the 2026-27 season.

Strong performance Saturday Gonzalez logged 17 points (6-7 FG, 4-4 3Pt, 1-2 FT), six rebounds and two assists over 21 minutes during Saturday's 144-106 preseason win over Philadelphia.

Impact Gonzalez played the entire fourth quarter and knocked down three triples in the frame to end the game as the Celtics' third-leading scorer behind Payton Pritchard (25 points) and Jayson Tatum (23 points). Gonzalez is one of the players that the Celtics hope can grow into a larger role after the team traded Jaylen Brown to the Sixers in exchange for Paul George. Gonzalez showed flashes of potential during his rookie year, but it's unclear how consistent his playing time will be in 2026-27, given the presence of Sam Hauser, Baylor Scheierman, Ron Harper (shoulder) and Jordan Walsh.

Headed to bench Gonzalez will come off the bench in Saturday's preseason game against the 76ers, Sean Grande of NBC Sports Boston reports.

Impact After sitting out the Celtics' preseason opener, Jayson Tatum (rest) and Paul George (rest) are back and starting, so Gonzalez will shift to a reserve role. Gonzalez averaged 3.8 points and 3.2 rebounds as a reserve last season.

Delivers balanced performance in win Gonzalez registered 15 points (5-9 FG, 3-6 3Pt, 2-2 FT), four rebounds and five assists across 26 minutes in Thursday's 124-113 preseason win over the Cavaliers.

Impact Gonzalez impressed with his versatility, contributing as both a scorer and facilitator while shooting efficiently from the field. The young wing connected on three triples and showed his ability to attack the basket. His five assists led the team, and his plus-seven rating led all starters. Gonzalez's all-around production should strengthen his case for a meaningful rotation role as Boston continues its preseason preparations. He's in the mix to start at shooting guard, as he's competing with Baylor Scheierman, Sam Hauser and Peyton Pritchard for that role.

Competing for starting role Gonzalez has a chance to claim a larger role in 2026-27 after the Celtics traded Jaylen Brown to the 76ers in exchange for Paul George.

Impact Assuming Boston remains steadfast in keeping Payton Pritchard as its sixth man off the bench, the competition as the starting shooting guard should come down to Gonzalez and Baylor Scheierman. Gonzalez made only three starts to Scheierman's 20 last regular season, so the former is likely to need a standout training camp this fall to make inroads in the race for a spot in the first unit.
