Team option declined The Jazz declined Mbeng's team option for 2026-27 on Monday, Tony Jones of The Athletic reports.

Impact Mbeng played a pivotal role for the Jazz down the stretch of the 2025-26 season, but the franchise opted against bringing him back. He will play for the Jazz during the Summer League, however.

Impact Mbeng moved back into the starting unit for the last game of the regular season and played all 48 minutes. The Jazz rewarded Mbeng with a two-year deal back on April 2, and he played a key role down the stretch with averages of 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.3 steals and 0.4 three-pointers in 32.8 minutes across 15 appearances.

Mbeng's signing and Kennedy Chandler's excellent play signal the possibility for some trade activity emanating from the team's backcourt in the offseason.

However, not only will he play Tuesday, he will re-enter the starting lineup for the first time since the 133-110 loss to the Wizards on March 25. In three starts this season, the 23-year-old has averaged 9.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 0.3 blocks and 1.3 steals across 40.0 minutes.

Impact Since joining the Jazz on March 13, Mbeng had been a staple in the rotation and averaged 29.8 minutes over his 12 appearances, but he was surprisingly phased out of the mix Sunday. Rather than turning to Mbeng on the second unit, head coach Will Hardy turned to Svi Mykhailiuk -- who had played in just one of the Jazz's previous 17 games -- to fill the eighth and final spot in the rotation. While the arrangement may not be permanent moving forward, Mbeng's lack of playing time Sunday illustrates the risk that the rookie guard will carry as a streaming option for steals over Utah's final three games of the season.

Impact The contract will likely be finalized prior to Friday's game against the Rockets and will keep Mbeng in the fold through the rest of the season and possibly into the 2026-27 campaign, depending on the terms of the deal.
