Amen Thompson News, Rumors, Updates - Houston Rockets

Goes for 12 points Thursday Thompson recorded 12 points (6-13 FG, 0-1 3Pt), five rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block across 22 minutes in Thursday's 116-89 preseason win over the Thunder.

Impact Thompson was one of six Houston players who scored in double digits in this comfortable win. As is the case with him, though, he left his mark in other areas as well, ranking third in rebounds and assists. Thompson is penciled as a starter in the Rockets' backcourt for the regular-season opener against the Mavericks on Oct. 21, and he should be a valuable fantasy asset in most formats due to his ability to fill the stat sheet with ease.

Contributes across multiple categories Thompson finished with 14 points (4-12 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 5-6 FT), seven rebounds, six assists, a steal and a block across 30 minutes in Sunday's 132-115 preseason loss to the Mavericks.

Impact Thompson delivered a versatile performance, leading all Houston players with six assists and finishing second with seven rebounds. Despite his shooting woes, Thompson's value will also come from his multi-category contributions rather than just his scoring prowess. On that note, he looks ready to go for the start of the 2026-27 regular season, where he should be a starter in the backcourt next to Fred VanVleet (rest).

Struggles with turnovers Thompson finished with eight points (4-8 FG), seven rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in 24 minutes during Friday's 135-117 preseason win over the Mavericks.

Impact As usual, Thompson contributed across the board. However, he committed an uncharacteristic six turnovers and didn't attempt a three-pointer. Thompson has been working on his free throws and jumper with shooting coach Chip Engelland this offseason after making just 21.6 percent of his three-point attempts last year. Despite being a subpar three-point shooter, Thompson turned in a career year in 2025-26, averaging 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.6 blocks across 37.4 minutes per game in 79 regular-season appearances. He parlayed that success into a five-year, $208 million extension this offseason.

Impact Thompson turned in a career year in 2025-26 before landing a five-year, $208 million extension earlier this month. The 23-year-old averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.5 steals and 0.6 blocks across 37.4 minutes per game in 79 regular-season appearances last year. However, his three-point shot remained a weakness, as he knocked down just 21.6 percent of his limited attempts from downtown. The 2023 No. 4 overall pick did shoot a career-best 77.9 percent from the free-throw line last season, though there's still room for improvement. Even if Thompson never develops into an above-average shooter, he's a well-rounded player who has already made strides as a playmaker. While his playmaking skills may be less utilized now that Fred VanVleet is back in the mix, Thompson should continue to play a key role while working to expand his offensive game.
