Twins RHP Zebby Matthews leaves game against Yankees with right foot injury

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Zebby Matthews left Saturday’s game against the New York Yankees because of a right foot laceration in the fifth inning
JULY 4 • Associated Press
Exits game with foot injury Matthews was removed during the fifth inning of Saturday's start against the Yankees due to a right foot laceration, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports.
Impact Matthews kept the Yankees off the board until the fourth inning before giving up another three runs in the fifth. Those struggles may have been due to his foot injury, and he'll end his day having allowed four runs on three hits (two homers) and four walks while striking out five across 4.2 innings. It's unclear whether the injury will prevent Matthews from making another turn in the rotation, with his next start slated for next weekend at home against the Angels.

Sparkles in victory Matthews (4-5) earned the win over Houston on Monday, allowing one run on four hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over seven innings.
Impact Matthews gave up just one extra-base hit Monday, a fifth-inning solo homer by Cam Smith. That was also the only run the righty-handed hurler allowed en route to his third straight quality start. Matthews matched his season high with seven punchouts and needed a modest 89 pitches (59 strikes) to cover seven frames, tying his longest outing of the campaign. He's had two seven-run clunkers this season but has given up three or fewer runs in each of his other seven starts, putting him at a decent 4.15 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 46:12 K:BB through 56.1 innings overall.

Takes tough-luck loss Matthews (3-5) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters over six innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Monday.
Impact Matthews gave up solo homers to Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman but otherwise held Los Angeles scoreless. However, Minnesota's offense managed just one run of support, saddling the right-hander with his fifth loss of the season. Despite the defeat, there were positives to take away from the performance for Matthews, as he notched his second straight quality start (and third over his past four outings) while finishing with his highest strikeout total through four starts in June. Matthews next lines up to take the mound at home against the Rockies.

Goes seven innings in win Matthews (3-4) earned the win Tuesday against the Rangers after tossing seven innings of two-run ball, allowing eight hits and striking out four.
Impact Matthews has been involved in the decision in each of his seven starts this season, but this was a big bounce-back outing after giving up seven runs on nine hits across six innings in a road loss to the Tigers the last time out. Matthews has five quality starts already and has pitched at least six frames in all but one of his seven appearances. He'll take a 4.78 ERA and 1.18 WHIP to his next start, scheduled for next week at home versus the Dodgers.

Tagged for seven runs in loss Matthews (2-4) took the loss Thursday against the Tigers, allowing seven runs on nine hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out four.
Impact It's the second time in three starts that Matthews has given up seven earned runs. The 26-year-old right-hander was hurt by the long ball Wednesday -- he gave up a season-high three homers in an eventual 11-0 loss to Detroit. Overall, Matthews' ERA sits at 5.20 with a 1.18 WHIP and 30:9 K:BB through his first six starts (36.1 innings) this year. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, tentatively scheduled to come on the road against the Rangers.

Rebounds for second win Matthews (2-3) earned the win against the Royals on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts over seven innings.
Impact Matthews yielded two runs in the first inning but kept the Royals off the board over his final six frames despite throwing just 57 of 100 pitches for strikes and generating only six whiffs. The final line was a welcome rebound from the seven-run blowup he endured Sunday, and the 26-year-old has now recorded a quality start in four of his five outings this season. He'll take a 4.15 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 26:8 K:BB across 30.1 innings into a road matchup against the Tigers next week.

Falls to Pittsburgh Matthews (1-3) took the loss Sunday against the Pirates, allowing seven runs on six hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out seven.
Impact It was a rough day for Matthews, who gave up seven runs in his third straight loss. The 26-year-old right-hander had been pitching well coming into the day, posting quality starts in his first three major-league outings this year while posting a 2.37 ERA across 19 innings. Matthews' ERA shot up to 4.63 following Sunday's outing, though he still sports a solid 1.03 WHIP and 24:4 K:BB across 23.1 innings. Matthews will look to rebound in his next start, currently scheduled to come next week at home against the Royals.

Third straight quality start Monday Matthews (1-2) took the loss Monday against the White Sox, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts across six innings.
Impact Matthews has made three starts since being recalled from Triple-A St. Paul, and he's a perfect three-for-three with quality starts. He was burned by the long ball in this one, surrendering a first-inning solo homer to Munetaka Murakami and a second-inning two-run shot to Drew Romo. That was all the scoring the White Sox needed in this one. Matthews now owns a terrific 2.37 ERA and 17:2 K:BB across 19 innings this season. Opponents aren't making hard contact against the right-hander, and he's walked just 2.1 percent of batters faced. Matthews is doing more than enough to remain in Minnesota's rotation.
