Exits with trainer
Matthews was removed from Friday's game against the Brewers with an apparent injury, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Matthews came out to the mound to warm up for the sixth inning but was taken out of the game by a trainer. It's unknown what the 26-year-old righty is dealing with, but the Twins should offer some clarity in the near future. Before his exit, Matthews had given up six runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks while collecting four strikeouts.

Rejoining Minnesota rotation
The Twins plan to recall Matthews from Triple-A St. Paul to start Friday's game against the Brewers in Milwaukee, Bobby Nightengale of The Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
Impact
Matthews will be entering the rotation as a replacement for Joe Ryan, who is expected to be headed to the injured list after he was diagnosed Thursday with a mild left glute strain. The 26-year-old Matthews -- who was demoted to Triple-A last weekend after losing his rotation spot to the newly acquired Dean Kremer -- owns a 5.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 69:26 K:BB in 81 innings over 14 starts for Minnesota.

Sent down to Triple-A
The Twins optioned Matthews to Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Impact
After striking out 10 batters in five innings during his start Friday, Matthews will head back to the minors to create roster space for A.J. Minter and open a spot in the rotation that will presumably be filled by Dean Kremer. Matthews has posted a 5.22 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 81 innings this season and is likely to remain as a depth piece at St. Paul for most of the remainder of the year, barring an injury to one of the Twins' starters.

Dials up 10 strikeouts in win
Matthews allowed three runs on four hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out 10 over five innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Friday.
Impact
While Matthews went winless in July, he was able to end the month with a couple of positive outings. Across five starts in July, he allowed a total of 23 runs (21 earned) across 24.2 innings with a 23:14 K:BB. The right-hander still needs to improve on consistency, but he has potential. He's at a 5.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 69:26 K:BB across 81 innings through 14 starts this season. However, it's unclear for now if he'll maintain a rotation spot after the Twins traded for Dean Kremer on Friday.

Quality start in loss
Matthews (4-8) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out one over six innings to take the loss Friday versus the Athletics.
Impact
Matthews bounced back from his last outing, when he was lit up for 10 runs (eight earned) over three innings. However, he posted his lowest strikeout total in any game this season despite earning his first quality start over four outings in July. The 26-year-old right-hander is now at a 5.21 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 59:24 K:BB through 76 innings over 13 starts this season. Matthews' next start is projected to be at home versus the Royals, which is another favorable matchup that should give him a chance to build some positive momentum.

Shelled in blowout loss
Matthews (4-7) took the loss Sunday against the Cubs, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits and three walks while striking out four over three innings.
Impact
Chicago's lineup jumped on Matthews early, as Alex Bregman opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first. After a one-run second, Nico Hoerner cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the third. The right-hander had surrendered seven runs through three innings, but he returned for the fourth and failed to record an out before four straight Cubs reached and two more runs crossed the plate, ending his outing. The eight earned runs were a season high for Matthews. After posting a 4.91 ERA over his final six starts before the All-Star break, Sunday's performance did little to inspire confidence heading into the second half. Matthews will carry a 5.40 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 58:21 K:BB into his next scheduled start at home against the Athletics.

Takes loss Friday
Matthews (4-6) took the loss Friday against the Angels, giving up four earned runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three batters over six innings.
Impact
Matthews had given up just one hit and one walk through the first three innings of Friday's contest, but things began to fall apart after he conceded a solo homer to Vaughn Grissom to lead off the fourth. Jorge Soler doubled during the ensuing at-bat and later scored on a balk, and the Angels began the fifth inning by putting up four consecutive hits against Matthews, adding two more runs to their lead. The 26-year-old righty has now coughed up eight earned runs in 10.2 innings across his last two starts, and he'll take a 4.57 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 54:18 K:BB into the All-Star break after 67 innings.

In clear to start Friday
Matthews (foot) is slated to start Friday's game against the Angels at Target Field.
Impact
Matthews was forced out of his previous start last Saturday against the Yankees due to a right foot laceration, but he was apparently able to make it though his bullpen session earlier this week without incident and won't have to miss a turn through the rotation. Since tying a season high by allowing seven earned runs in a June 11 outing versus the Tigers, Matthews has enjoyed a strong run of form over his subsequent four starts, posting a 3.28 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB in 24.2 innings.
