Phillies host Braves, look to build on Nola's solid outing

Strong effort wasted by bullpen Wheeler didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-5 loss to Atlanta, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter.

Impact The right-hander was sharp, throwing 71 of 105 pitches for strikes while setting a season high for strikeouts, and Wheeler took a shutout into the seventh inning before Austin Riley tagged him for a two-run shot. Unfortunately for the Phillies, the new high-leverage duo of Hector Neris and Brandon Workman proceeded to melt down in the eighth and ninth. Wheeler will take a 2.76 ERA and 20:6 K:BB through 32.2 innings into his next outing Friday, a rematch with Atlanta back at Citizens Bank Park.

Impact Wheeler was forced to settle for a no-decision in his last turn through the rotation. However, he was sharp against the Mets as he held them scoreless outside of two runs in the fourth inning. The right-hander's strikeout rate has been down to begin the season, but he's been able to mainly limit run production with a 2.81 ERA over 25.2 innings across four starts this season. He'll attempt to remain effective on the road Saturday against Atlanta.

Struggles late Wheeler allowed three earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out two across 5.2 innings Tuesday against the Orioles. He did not factor into the decision.

Impact Wheeler held the Orioles scoreless through five innings but was never particularly dominant, as he allowed at least one baserunner in each of the first three innings. He sat down six in a row and appeared to be in a rhythm until he allowed four of the first six batters he faced to reach base in the sixth frame, accounting for all three of his earned runs. While Wheeler has a 2.89 ERA through 18.2 innings, he has yet to display the ability to miss bats as he has just eight strikeouts compared to five walks. He'll draw his next start Sunday against the Mets.
