INJURIES

To play catch Tuesday Wheeler (finger) will play catch Tuesday as the Phillies try to determine whether or not he'll be able to pitch this week, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Impact Wheeler tore his fingernail while putting on his pants last week and is at risk of missing an extended period. He threw a bullpen session Monday and will throw again Tuesday, and if the nail holds up fine he could be cleared to start Thursday against the Mets.

Tests nail in bullpen session Wheeler (finger) threw a bullpen session Monday, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Impact Wheeler skipped his scheduled start Saturday against the Marlins after tearing his fingernail while putting on his pants. He's reportedly dealt with fingernail issues since he was an amateur. If the nail responded well to the bullpen session, Wheeler could pitch later in the week, but if it responds poorly, a trip to the injured list can't be ruled out.

Won't start Monday Wheeler (finger) won't start Monday's game against the Marlins, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic reports.
Impact The team originally hoped the right-hander would be able to take the mound Monday after being scratched from Friday's scheduled start due to the nail issue on his right middle finger, but he'll need more time to be game ready. Wheeler played catch Saturday, and manager Joe Girardi said the team anticipates him being able to take the mound sometime during the upcoming three-game series against the Mets, which begins Tuesday.

Phils setback: Zack Wheeler rips nail putting on his pants

Could miss extended period Wheeler is at risk of missing an extended period, as the injured nail on his right middle finger may need to be removed, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Impact Wheeler caught the nail on his zipper while putting on pants Thursday. For now, he's only seen his start bumped back from Friday to Monday, but the Phillies don't seem confident he'll be able to pitch at that time. If the nail does indeed have to be removed, he could be sidelined for quite some time. The Phillies will go with a bullpen day in what would have been his start Saturday against the Marlins and could be forced down a similar route Monday.

Impact In a very strange occurrence, Wheeler caught his nail putting on his pants and won't be able to pitch until Monday at the earliest, according to Girardi. The Phillies will now go with a bullpen game during the second half of Friday's twin bill, with Spencer Howard's start being pushed to Saturday.

Turns in quality start Wheeler allowed three earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out seven across six innings Monday against the Mets. He did not factor into the decision.
Impact Wheeler threw four scoreless innings, but was tripped up a bit in the fifth when he surrendered four doubles to account for all three of his earned runs. It was otherwise an efficient outing for Wheeler, as he needed only 83 pitches to log 18 outs -- 13 of which came via either groundball or strikeout. Overall, Wheeler has maintained a 2.47 ERA with a 36:9 K:BB across 51 innings this season. He'll draw his next start Saturday at Miami.

Bullpen spoils strong outing again Wheeler did not factor into the decision in Friday's 7-4 win over Atlanta, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out three over 5.2 innings.
Impact Wheeler had another solid performance wasted by his bullpen Friday, but nonetheless, the right-hander still remains one of the most consistent starting pitchers in the league. Wheeler has lasted at least 5.2 innings in all of his starts and has yet to give up more than three runs as his 2.58 ERA is tied for 14th amongst all starting pitchers. Despite his production, Wheeler has tallied a win just three times in his six starts as he will look forward to his next scheduled outing for Wednesday against the Nationals.
