Homers in MLB debut Tsutsugo went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Friday's loss to the Blue Jays.
Impact Tsutsugo made his highly-anticipated MLB debut Friday after performing well in Japan over the last three seasons, and he was able to drive a two-run homer in the fifth inning. The 28-year-old struggled a bit with strikeouts in his final NPB season in 2019, but he should provide some left-handed power early in the Rays' lineup this year.

Fans four in Blue Jays debut Ryu allowed three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four over 4.2 innings in Friday's win against the Rays. He didn't factor into the decision.
Impact Ryu tossed three scoreless frames to begin his Opening Day start, but he gave up his first run in a Blue Jays uniform during the fourth inning. He nearly escaped the fifth inning, but Yoshi Tsutsugo hit a two-run homer with two outs, leading to Ryu's removal. The southpaw said after the game that nerves got the better of him since he was making his first start with a new club. In 44 starts during the past two seasons with the Dodgers, the 33-year-old posted a 2.21 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while recording a 21-8 record. Ryu's next start should come at home Thursday against the Nationals.

Will be in upper half of lineup Tsutsugo isn't likely to hit out of the leadoff spot at the beginning of the season according to manager Kevin Cash, but the Japanese slugger will be in the "upper part of the line...
Impact Austin Meadows continues to recover from his previous positive COVID-19 test as Opening Day quickly approaches, and Tsutsugo does bring a left-handed power bat to the equation. The 28-year-old did generate an elevated 25.3 percent strikeout rate during his final NPB season in 2019, potentially making him a less-than-ideal candidate for a role at the very top of the order. Tustusugo does offer plenty of pop, however, so a slotting anywhere from the second to fifth spot in the lineup could prove to be a much better fit.

Status for Opening Day in doubt Manager Kevin Cash said Friday there's uncertainty if Meadows (illness) will be available for Opening Day, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.
Impact The 25-year-old tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on the injured list Thursday, potentially making him unavailable for the start of the season. Meadows has no official timeline for his return, but with only one week until Opening Day he would need a quick turnaround after shifting to the IL. He was present for the start of summer training but last participated in workouts about two weeks ago. Manuel Margot, Yoshi Tsutsugo and Brandon Lowe could work in left field if Meadows remains on the shelf.

Toils through sluggish spring Lowe hit .227 (5-for-22) with two doubles, two RBI, two walks and one run across 11 Grapefruit League games during spring training.
Impact Lowe arrived in camp approximately 20 pounds lighter, but as his spring line indicates, that hasn't yet translated to increased success at the plate. The 24-year-old did make a strong case for himself over his 50-game major-league debut last season, slashing .263/.325/.454 with 15 extra-base hits (eight doubles, seven home runs), 19 RBI, 13 walks and 24 runs across 169 plate appearances. Lowe put in time at first base (21 games), third base (four games) and designated hitter (17 games) in 2019; that versatility should help keep his chances of securing an Opening Day roster spot relatively strong, although the offseason arrivals of Jose Martinez and Yoshi Tsutsugo does make it more of a challenge.
