Remains on Triple-A roster
Mercedes remains on the active roster at Triple-A Charlotte and is in uniform for Thursday's game, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Mercedes appeared to announce his retirement in an Instagram post Wednesday, but he'll ultimately remain with the Triple-A club going forward. The 28-year-old has slashed .298/.365/.632 with four homers, 12 runs and 10 RBI across 15 games in the minors this year.

Announces retirement Wednesday
Mercedes announced his retirement in an Instagram post Wednesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Mercedes hit .309 with four home runs and 10 RBI after being optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on July 2. Chances of the 28-year-old rookie getting recalled by the White Sox this season were slim, especially with the looming returns of Eloy Jimenez (pectoral) and Luis Robert (hip). If this is indeed the end of Mercedes' MLB career, he retires with a .270 average and seven home runs in 241 at-bats, all but one of which came in 2021.

Demoted to Triple-A
Mercedes was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
Impact
Mercedes was held out of the lineup in five of the past eight games and will now head to the minors. The 28-year-old broke out with an 1.113 OPS, five homers and 16 RBI in April but he's struggled over the past two months, slashing .196/.264/.272 with only two long balls in 47 games. Mercedes could rejoin Chicago later in the year if he can get back on track in the minors, but for now he'll head to Charlotte. Jake Burger, one of the organization's top prospects, was promoted as part of Friday's transactions and likely will see time as the designated hitter with Mercedes optioned.

Not starting Tuesday
Mercedes is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Twins.
Impact
Mercedes doesn't appear to deserve everyday at-bats at the moment, as he's hit just .175/.234/.246 over his last 35 games. Yasmani Grandal will serve as the designated hitter in his absence, with Zack Collins taking over behind the plate.

Doubles, drives in three
Mercedes went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored in a win over Seattle in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader.
Impact
Mercedes got things started early with a two-run double in the first inning. He later knocked an RBI single and came around to score in the fourth. The 28-year-old rookie is slashing .273/.326/.408 with 17 extra-base hits and 37 RBI this season. Sunday was just his second multi-RBI performance since May 29.

Remains on bench
Mercedes will sit Friday against the Mariners.
Impact
Mercedes finds himself on the bench for the third game in a row. The first two can be explained by the fact that the White Sox were playing in a National League park, but it's possible his playing time is set to slip even when a designated hitter is available. Mercedes hit .364/.414/.557 through his first 40 games, but the wheels have fallen off since then. In his last 26 contests, he's hitting a miserable .122/.184/.167. Yasmani Grandal will rest his legs as the designated hitter Friday, with Zack Collins starting behind the plate.

Sitting in NL park
Mercedes remains out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates.
Impact
With no designated hitter available in Pittsburgh, Mercedes will remain on the bench for a second straight day. After a blazing first two months of the season, regression has come hard for Mercedes in June. Through 15 games this month, Mercedes is slashing .132/.179/.151 while striking out in a quarter of his plate appearances.

Not in lineup
Mercedes will be on the bench for Friday's game against Houston.
Impact
Mercedes sits for the second time in three games and the third time in the last six contests. It's not hard to see why he's losing playing time, as he's hit a miserable .122/.189/.171 over his last 23 games after hitting .364/.414/.557 through his first 40. Yasmani Grandal will be the designated hitter Friday, with Zack Collins starting behind the plate.

Sitting Sunday
Mercedes is not in the starting lineup Sunday against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Fighting first major slump
Mercedes went 2-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 15-2 win over the Tigers.
Impact
Mercedes has hit his first sustained slump and entered Saturday's contest with just eight hits over the last 64 at-bats (.125). Manager Tony La Russa tried moving him to second in the order the previous two games in an effort to break the slump. A positive sign is that Saturday's effort was the third time in the last four games he's had a hit (5-for-18). Despite the slump, Mercedes remains second on the club with 34 RBI and will continue to his in the middle of the order.
