Impact Perez entered the game as a defensive replacement after Zach McKinstry left following a collision, and the former didn't come to the plate until the eighth inning. He made the at-bat count, however, as the outfielder lifted his first home run of the year to break a 1-1 tie. It was a positive moment for Perez, though he still looks like a reserve option for the Tigers after getting recalled from Triple-A Toledo last week.

Given that McKinstry has mustered a lowly .537 OPS through 37 plate appearances on the season, Perez should still receive plenty of opportunities to stake a claim to a larger share of the playing time in right field.

Impact Perez failed to make the Opening Day roster out of spring training, but he's now needed as a replacement for the injured Parker Meadows (arm/concussion). The 26-year-old Perez had a .738 OPS with 13 home runs and eight stolen bases in 100 games for the Tigers last season and had collected an .807 OPS with two homers and three steals in his first 10 contests at Toledo in 2026. He should see plenty of action in the Detroit outfield while Meadows is shelved.

Odd man out for roster spot The Tigers optioned Perez to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Impact The 26-year-old was the early favorite to begin the season as Detroit's primary right fielder, but he'll instead open the campaign in the minors after batting .158 (6-for-38) with no extra-base hits across 16 spring training games. Top prospect Kevin McGonigle is essentially the roster replacement for Perez, but it'll likely be Matt Vierling that benefits the most from the demotion. Perez had a .738 OPS in 383 plate appearances during the regular season last year should still get a look with the Tigers at some point in 2026.

Impact Perez had a promising sophomore campaign in 2025, as he increased his production from 2024 across the board to finish with a career-best 13 home runs, 43 RBI and a .738 OPS across 100 regular-season contests. He's off to a sluggish start this spring but should still have the inside track to the starting role in right field. Utility man Matt Vierling could see more time in right if Perez's slump lasts into the regular season, and Kerry Carpenter is also an option there on days when he's not serving as the DH.

Fades into reserve role Perez is out of the lineup Wednesday for Game 4 of the ALDS versus the Mariners.

Impact Since returning from the injured list in late May, Perez had served as a near-everyday player for the Tigers through the end of the regular season and during the wild-card round series victory over the Guardians, but he's moved into a backup role for the ALDS. With Detroit welcoming Colt Keith back from a rib injury that kept him out of the wild-card round, Perez has found himself as the odd man out of the lineup for the first four games of the ALDS. Keith will once again serve as the Tigers' designated hitter Wednesday, which will result in Kerry Carpenter displacing Perez in right field.
