Impact Scott put the Cardinals on the board with a three-run shot in the second inning and later stole second base after reaching on a fielder's choice. The 24-year-old outfielder struggled to the tune of a .502 OPS through 155 MLB plate appearances as a rookie in 2024. He played his way onto the Opening Day roster with a 1.172 OPS in spring training and has already shown some flashes to start the 2025 campaign with three stolen bases and a home run through three games.

Impact The 24-year-old outfielder picked up his first hits and first steals of 2025 after an 0-for-4 showing Thursday. Scott is getting another chance to prove he's the Cardinals' center fielder of the future, so he'll likely have a long leash, but plate discipline remains his biggest obstacle -- he's already struck out three times in eight at-bats to begin the season after posting a 6:42 BB:K in 53 games during his big-league debut last year.

The big numbers in exhibition play pushed Scott ahead of Michael Siani for the starting role in center field, and Scott should now be a hot commodity in fantasy, especially for his potential to steal loads of bases -- he posted a 99th percentile sprint speed last season and has swiped 95 bags in the minors in 2023.

However, the Cardinals are also mulling using Lars Nootbaar in center field some days in order to get other bats into the lineup, which could be factored into the decision on Scott.

Impact Lars Nootbaar appears set to see most of his playing time in left field and will be the backup in center field behind whoever out of Scott and Siani wins that job. Scott has had a nice spring at the plate, going 7-for-22 with one home run and four stolen bases. He's also impressive the team with his "work ethic, confidence and maturity this spring," per Woo. Meanwhile, Siani is only 1-for-25 at the dish during Grapefruit League play but offers the superior glove. The Cardinals are not expected to carry both Scott and Siani on the Opening Day roster, so the loser of this battle appears destined for Triple-A Memphis.

Impact Scott had started in center field in each of the last four contests and 10 of the lsat 11 games, but he appears headed for a steep downturn in playing time after manager Oliver Marmol said that Michael Siani -- who was activated from the injured list Sunday -- would see the "bulk of the time in center field" moving forward, per Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat. At least for the time being, the Cardinals will keep Scott in the fold in a bench role, where he prove to be a weapon in the late innings thanks to his speed on the basepaths.
