Shut down from throwing The Mets have shut down Megill (elbow) from throwing after the 30-year-old right-hander experienced tightness in his right arm, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Impact Megill was knocked around for five runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three batters across two innings during Sunday's rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse. Laura Albanese of Newsday notes that Megill experienced tightness when throwing his secondary pitches and will undergo an MRI, but this latest setback puts a potential return this season in jeopardy.

Impact After turning in a 21:6 K:BB and posting a 1.93 ERA over 14 innings in his first four rehab starts between Syracuse and Double-A Binghamton, Megill has regressed while making his last two minor-league appearances for the Triple-A club. Between those outings, Megill has allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and four walks across six innings. Though he's now tossed at least 65 pitches in each of his last four appearances in the minors and looks to be stretched out enough to handle a starting role, Megill's poor showings his last two times out have probably removed him from consideration for a spot in New York's rotation once he's activated from the 60-day injured list. The Mets look content to proceed with rookies Jonah Tong and Brandon Sproat at the back end of the rotation, so Megill could be ticketed for a long-relief role with the big club once his rehab assignment ends.

Strikes out five in rehab outing Megill (elbow) struck out five batters and allowed three earned runs on six hits and two walks over four innings in a rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Syracuse.

Impact After tossing five innings in the third start of his rehab assignment Aug. 22, Megill has now covered four frames his last two times out at Triple-A, but he was able to get stretched out to 79 pitches Tuesday and looks ready to return from the 60-day injured list. The Mets haven't confirmed that Megill will be deployed as a starter upon his activation, though he looks like a decent bet to get a look in that role while Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea have struggled since the beginning of August to put their standing in the rotation on shaky ground. If Megill is inserted into the rotation, he could be reinstated for Sunday's game in Cincinnati, though the Mets may prefer to wait until early next week to make a roster move in order to give him an extra day or two to recover from Tuesday's outing with Syracuse.
