Shifts to IL The Cubs placed Chatwood (back) on the 10-day injured list Sunday, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports.

Impact Mid-back tightness prevented Chatwood from making his scheduled start Friday against the Brewers, but he was able to play catch Saturday and was expected to be ready to pitch in the first game of Monday's doubleheader with the Cardinals. The Cubs evidently didn't feel Chatwood was in fair enough condition after re-evaluating him Sunday, however, so the right-hander will now miss at least one or two more turns through the rotation while he recovers from the injury. Jose Quintana (thumb) could return from the IL later in the week to take Chatwood's spot in the rotation, but the Cubs will still require a replacement starter for him during one half of Monday's doubleheader. Kyle Hendricks will now take the hill for the first game of the twin bill, but manager David Ross hasn't announced a starter for the second contest.

Impact Just one day after being scratched from his scheduled start with mid-back tightness, Chatwood played catch on the field and reportedly felt good afterward. Assuming Chatwood doesn't experience any setbacks, manager David Ross said that he'll send the pitcher out to the mound Monday.

Impact Chatwood was scratched from a start Friday after experiencing some mid-back tightness. David Ross stated that the 30-year-old righty could make his next start as soon as Monday depending on how he feels. It's still too early to tell whether Chatwood will end up taking the mound in a few days, but the fact that he's already throwing a day after experiencing some pain is a positive sign he's making progress.

If he feels good, there's a chance that he could start as early as Monday against the Cardinals. Colin Rea will step in to start Saturday against the Brewers after Alec Mills started in Chatwood's place Friday.

Roughed up Thursday Chatwood (2-1) took the loss against Kansas City on Thursday, tossing 2.1 innings and allowing eight runs on 11 hits while striking out four.

Impact Chatwood looked great in picking up wins in each of his first two starts this season, but he was run over by the Royals on Thursday. The right-hander gave up a run in the first inning and two in the second, then imploded by yielding five consecutive hits -- four of which went for extra bases -- before being pulled with one out in the third. By the time the wreckage was cleared, Chatwood had been charged with eight earned runs to inflate his season ERA from 0.71 to 5.40. The right-hander will try to bounce back when he faces Cleveland on the road Wednesday in his next scheduled start.
