Optioned to Triple-A
Cleveland optioned McKenzie to Triple-A Columbus on Saturday.
Impact
Friday's short, six-run outing marked the fifth time in eight starts McKenzie yielded at least three earned runs. Further, the righty's control issues (30 walks in 31.1 innings) gave little choice to a Cleveland team that, with its subpar lineup, requires solid starting pitching to remain competitive on a nightly basis. McKenzie will almost certainly return to the big-league club at some point this season, but for now he'll have some time in Triple-A to work on his command.

Struggles against Minnesota
McKenzie (1-3) was tagged with the loss Friday against the Twins after giving up six runs on two hits and five walks while fanning four across 3.1 innings.
Impact
McKenzie had massive issues finding the plate, allowing a season-high five walks while also throwing just 37 of his 72 pitches for strikes. The control woes are nothing new for the right-hander, as he has issued four or more walks in all but two starts this season while posting a 44:30 K:BB across 31.1 innings in 2021. His next start is scheduled for next week on the road against the Tigers.

Gives up two homers in loss
McKenzie (1-2) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 4.1 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus Seattle.
Impact
The right-hander allowed a solo home run to Mitch Haniger in the first inning and a three-run blast to Dylan Moore in the fourth. McKenzie hadn't pitched since May 6, as Cleveland's schedule allowed them to skip him once through the rotation. He sports a 5.79 ERA with a 1.64 WHIP, 40:25 K:BB and seven homers allowed in 28 innings. His velocity is down to 91.3 mph from 92.8 mph last year, and that combined with a 19.7 percent walk rate and batters posting a 53.2 percent hard-hit rate against him has led to significant struggles in 2021.

Earns first win
McKenzie (1-1) pitched five scoreless innings on two hits and four walks while striking out five, earning the win over the Royals on Thursday.
Impact
McKenzie turned the tide Thursday, earning his first win of the season while holding the opposition off the scoresheet for the first time. However, the 23-year-old still walked four batters for the fourth start in a row. He'll carry a 4.94 ERA and 1.61 WHIP in 23.2 innings into Wednesday's start against the Cubs.
