INJURIES

Starting Saturday vs. Mariners McKenzie will start Saturday's game against the Mariners, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Impact He tossed 5.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts and two walks in a June 6 start for Triple-A Columbus. However, McKenzie had a 7.56 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 36:21 K:BB in 25 innings over six May starts with the big club. If he can hold his own, he could stick around in the rotation.

Calling Triston McKenzie (again) and 5 other things about the Cleveland Indians The Indians are expected to recall right-hander Triston McKenzie so he can start against Seattle on Saturday at Progressive Field.

May start Saturday McKenzie may be recalled to start for Cleveland on Saturday against the Mariners, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.
Impact Manager Terry Francona suggested as much Tuesday, and it makes sense that McKenzie, despite his struggles in 2021, would start Saturday over Cal Quantrill. Quantrill did nothing Sunday against the Orioles to earn another start, allowing seven runs (five earned) in 1.1 innings. Having yielded at least five runs in three of his last four big-league starts, McKenzie hasn't fared much better than Quantrill, but he's likely to get yet another opportunity Saturday against a Mariners lineup that shelled him for two homers and five runs May 15.

Sent back to minors Cleveland optioned McKenzie to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.
Impact For the second time in less than a week, McKenzie was optioned to the minors immediately after making a start. In his latest outing in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader with the White Sox, McKenzie struck out a season-high 10 batters, but he was still tagged for five runs on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a no-decision. Unless Cleveland places a player on the injured list in a corresponding move, McKenzie won't be eligible to rejoin the big club until the latter half of next week. After a rainout Wednesday, Cleveland has off days June 3, June 7 and June 10, so the club may choose to get by with a four-man rotation sans McKenzie until June 15.

Cal Quantrill, Triston McKenzie give Cleveland Indians something to ponder after Monday’s starts Both Quantrill and McKenzie had strong outings against the White Sox on Monday in a split doubleheader for the Indians.

Yields five runs in no-decision McKenzie allowed five runs on four hits and two walks over 5.1 innings in a loss during Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader. He struck out 10 and did not factor in the decision.
Impact McKenzie was cursed by an ugly second inning where he allowed four runs on three hits and two walks. However, he set a new franchise record with eight consecutive strikeouts and he punched out nine of the last 11 batters he faced. The 23-year-old righty has allowed at least five runs in three of his last four starts, raising his season ERA to 6.26. If Cleveland elects to give McKenzie another turn in the rotation, he could face the Orioles on the road this weekend.

Called up ahead of start Cleveland recalled McKenzie from Triple-A Columbus to start Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader with the White Sox.
Impact Though he was sent back to Columbus after tossing five shutout innings against the Tigers on May 26, McKenzie was never expected to remain in the minors for long with Cleveland still in need of a fifth starter with Zach Plesac (thumb) on the injured list. Assuming he's able to avoid a disastrous showing Monday that would result in another demotion, McKenzie should line up for a two-start week. His second turn will likely come Sunday in Baltimore.

Sent back down McKenzie was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.
Impact McKenzie returned to the major-league mound as the starter in Wednesday's game and allowed one hit and three walks while striking out five in five scoreless innings. Although he pitched effectively in the no-decision, he'll return to the minors after outfielder Bradley Zimmer was recalled in a corresponding move. However, McKenzie could return to the big-league club when his next turn in the rotation comes up Monday. Cleveland has a doubleheader against the White Sox that day, and McKenzie would be eligible to return earlier than normal if he's designated as the club's 27th man for the twin bill.
MAY 27, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Strong outing in return McKenzie didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Tigers, giving up only one hit over five scoreless innings. He struck out five while walking three.
Impact The 23-year-old's brief demotion seemed to light a fire under McKenzie and he returned to deliver his best start of the season, although facing the Detroit offense didn't hurt either. He still only tossed 44 of 73 pitches for strikes, and he's issued at least three free passes in seven straight outings, so the issues that originally cost him his rotation spot haven't gone away. With Zach Plesac (thumb) potentially out of action for a month or more, however, Cleveland has few other options. McKenzie will carry a 5.94 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 49:33 K:BB through 36.1 innings into his next start, expected to come in a twin bill against the White Sox on Monday.

Call-up official Cleveland recalled McKenzie from Triple-A Columbus ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Tigers.
Impact McKenzie will reclaim a spot in the rotation after Zach Plesac (thumb) was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Cleveland plans to demote McKenzie after Wednesday's outing, but he would be eligible to return on four days' rest Monday. Cleveland will have a doubleheader against the White Sox that day, so McKenzie could be designated as the team's 27th man for the twin bill while starting one of the two contests. Over his previous eight outings (seven starts) in the big leagues this season, McKenzie posted a 6.89 ERA and 1.69 WHIP while striking out 44 over 31.1 innings.
MAY 26, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Picking up start Wednesday Cleveland plans to recall McKenzie from Triple-A Columbus to start Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.
Impact McKenzie was optioned to Columbus last weekend after he was lit up for 11 earned runs in 7.2 innings across his last two outings. Cleveland ideally would have wanted McKenzie to find some success at Triple-A before bringing him back, but the 23-year-old will be summoned to the majors sooner than anticipated after Zach Plesac (thumb) was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday. According to Bell, McKenzie will be optioned to Triple-A following Wednesday's start, but he could still return to Cleveland early next week. Cleveland has a doubleheader against the White Sox next Monday, and McKenzie could be designated as the 27th man for the twin bill if the team wants him to start one of the two contests.
