Starting season on IL The Tigers placed Sweeney (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, retroactive to March 22.

Impact The 25-year-old suffered the right shoulder strain at the start of camp and was unable to play in any games during spring training. Sweeney will require a rehab assignment to get some games in before returning from the injured list. Even once healthy, he could be ticketed for the minors with top prospect Kevin McGonigle beginning the year as Detroit's primary shortstop.

Cleared to start throwing program The Tigers announced Friday that Sweeney (shoulder) has started his throwing program, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Impact Sweeney is working his way back from a right shoulder strain. After being cleared to start hitting again earlier this week, he's now able to start throwing. It gives Sweeney a chance to be ready for Opening Day in 13 days.

Taking part in hitting progression The Tigers announced Tuesday that Sweeney (shoulder) is completing a return-to-play hitting progression, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Impact Sweeney might be ready to make his Grapefruit League debut as a designated hitter at some point in the near future, but the Tigers haven't provided word regarding when the shortstop might be ready to begin throwing again as he works his way back from a left shoulder strain. Detroit is unlikely to carry Sweeney on its Opening Day roster if he's available only as a DH, so at this point, he could be trending toward a stint on the injured list to begin the season.

Impact At this point, it does not seem to be a serious setback, but it's unclear when Sweeney might be ready to throw again and play in games. The 25-year-old was already a bit down in the pecking order at shortstop for the Tigers, and this setback won't help his chances at earning a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Impact Sweeney will join fellow left-handed hitters Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith on the bench for the series opener while the Mets send southpaw Sean Manaea to the bump. Though Sweeney started in both of the previous two contests and has been seeing semi-regular run at shortstop since being called up from Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 10, he's slashing just .205/.225/.359 over a stretch of 16 games.
